Looking a purchasing one of these in the new year. i drive about 30 miles a day to and from uni. looking for summit quicker than my 1.2 clio which is about 82bhp!

so looking at 1.8 petrol or 1.7dti.

what type of MPG can you realistically get from the petrol - i would be interested in doing a few track days and like back road blasts so that is swaying me towards the petrol.

but the diesel has advantages - far as im aware they are around 100bhp standard, so can these be remapped? if so how much? how do they drive in comparison to the petrol??

and finally whats the difference in torque between the two.

basically looking opinions on which would be the better purchase - and i would be buying a facelift version if that makes a difference!

thanks in advance!

the 1.8 is available pre facelift and later, the 1.7 cdti is only available after the facelift so 2003 onwards.

check here for all the stats on both cars

as far as i know the 1.8 has been known to hit around 150 bhp with help from a remap, induction kits, exhaust systems and uprated cams and manifolds etc.

the diesel i think hits 120ish bhp with a tuning box but the torque makes up the power difference from what i hear.

if it were me and mpg is a factor i'd buy the derv and stick a tuning box on it. it has chunkier five stud alloys, sri mirrors and mpg and torque figures that the 1.8 brigade can only dream about. the only downside is they are as rare as hens teeth in NI so you might have to cross the water for one

if your doing 30miles a day, go for the derv, will be by far alot more economical

the 1.7 DTI's are refacelift models only. Not sure if they can be remapped or not. However, they are not 100bhp, that is the Facelift 1.7 CDTi ;)
