Hello, Passed my test today :yippe:

However, Ive also put in a an Alpine Amp and have got SPL Dynamics SD-6.2 components, but whenever i turn it up reasonably loud the tweeeter is making a horrible distorted noise, which is slowly getting worse. Anyone had this before and know whats wrong with it?

p.s this is not the tweeter that i accidently pierced with a knife which i put in a previous thread, this tweeter has not been damaged to my knoledge in any way!

is the said tweeter amplified? and does it have a crossover?

does the noise change with engine revs?

have u had the moozic 2 loud and its blown ?, does it sound crackily/fluttery (kind of like a fart gone wrong lol) ?

ok, it is amplified with a small alpine 2 channel amp, thats only putting 50wattsRMS into each channel, and i have wired up the crossover correctly. I dont think ive played the music to loud to be blown either, the woofer is working perfectly aswell. And it does not change as i rev the engine, so i dont think its interference.

I was thinking, maybe ive set something up on the amp wrong, but im sure its on the high pass filter, should i just try turning this off prehaps?

could me putting the wrong positive and negative wire into the crossover cause such problems?

maybie, but i think it sounds like its blown, it could be because of the cross over but i severely doubt it

Is the amp clipping because you have the gains set too high? If you turn the gain down does the problem disappear?

Otherwise it sounds pretty blown to me. Has it developed this problem or has it always had this wrong with it? If so it might be a faulty product.

agreed, fiddle with the amp settings mate. You might be putting too much into your speakers

I had a similar problem with an old infinty tweeter. The reason: my crossover unit was faulty and the tweeter was receiving the entire frequency range (ouch!) If this is a brand new set, it sounds like crossover is at fault and I would return them. Also, take note of the above advice regarding gain settings! If in doubt on how to set this up just ask :)

i had it, my neons the wires wherent covered so was getting a frequency off them, i just sniped the wire in the twetwer and reconected with wire showing, was fine after that

both tweeters are know making distorted noises!

How high is your gain set? Where are your signal wires (rca leads and speaker wire) running both to and from the amp?

my gain is set on maximum atm, i understand this could be the problem but i was under the impression because the comps were rated to 80watts rms and the amps was 50watts rms per channel there wouldnt be a problem!

The signal wires are all run properly, on the opposite side of the car to the power cable!

what the voltage of the HU preout?

Hi, it has one preout and its 2V

Hi, it has one preout and its 2V

what are your gains set to on your amp?

As they should be 2v to match your preout

cheers buddy, will have to check tommorow, i just rember whacking the gain knob up to max, newbie style 8)

I realy hope this is the problem and that i havnt damaged the tweeters in any way!

pretty sure i got the same problem mate, a sort of distorted sound. However i tend to hear the noise when im driving at higher engine revs and even though my headunits off, anyone know why this is or what the noise could be.

The distortion is what you call clipping, where the top of the sound wave is 'clipped' off. This is because the gains are set to high.

So lower your gains to a suitable level and it should sound much better.

Dont be surprised if youve damaged anything though if youve had the volume up full with the gains on max

You are basically putting a square wave through your speakers. The voice coils will cook in no time.

Advice to all newbies - DO NOT SET THE GAIN AT MAX!!!
It shouldn't be there in 99.9% of installs.

hmm just had a look at the amp, and its max gain is 2V, the same as the headunit preout, i turned it down to midway though and it does sound alot better!

The higher the voltage, the lower gain it is - I think thats what Coops told me anyways

What amp do you have? As every one of the 4 amps ive had has gone upto 6v

tollmanuk

Its an Alpine T130 well i guessed its 2v, it dont actually say the last reading, but 3/4 of the way round is 1.5v so max must be around 2v

Well turn it to the opposite end to the minimum since there is no maximum marking.
Have the HU on the maximum listening volume you will use.
Turn up the gain until it reaches a volume that you are happy for it to top out at.
If this is well off the 1.5v mark then that's all great, if it is on or beyond it then you will have to turn it back to the higher voltage side of the 1.5v mark and make do.

I hope that makes sense.
