I'm looking for the most quality subwoofer there is for under £300.
Been looking at Alpine, Re Audio, everything! Anyone help me out with their opinions?

So SPL then. Well...
RE SX15 (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/audio-sx15-p-2966.html)
A great sub at a ridiculous price.

was looking at this earlier....think it might have to be the one! are they reliable?
Yes. Very.
And will take silly power too.
How much RMS power have you got for it?

Built like fort knox.
This (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/orion-hcca-p-6180.html) is an alternative if you can give it the power, but tbh I would still go for the RE SX15

You will need a very good amp to power either of those suggested subs. Not an xplod or mutant etc...

Say I were building a system for dance/garage/trance. Would I be looking to buy a different sized sub and box than somebody going for RnB ? What about amps and components etc ?

Generally, a 12" sub is a jack of all trades and it what would probably be best for you :)

different subs are sometimes made for different types. for instance im looking for RMS output and thermal handling coz i listen to a lot of dnb n dubstep which is constant bass. so i want summin that wont cut out.
you my friend are probably looking for something more punchy
I'll come back to this in feb time lol

Any sub can cut out, having high RMS or thermal handing doesnt affect that.
It doesnt cut out becuase it cant handle it, it will smoke and blow the coils if it cant.
It will cut out because of a badly set up amp that is clipping or has loose connections etc.
If you set the system up correctly, regardless of RMS or thermal etc, it should never cut out.
Surely an amp will have a cut off for when it gets too hot?
Yes it would, but again thats due to a bad setup becuase there isnt adequate cooling
i'd go for a 10" imo graham, for that type of music there is not much bass, and the bass that is there is generaly quick sharp and punchy.

wow you obv know your stuff coops! ur the man for the job when im deciding then :)

Ah right by setup I thought you just meant connections and gauges of wires etc.
That makes sense now.

I'll make a large thread about it come the end of jan/early feb. lol

A 12" is still sharp and punchy if in the correct box :dontknow:
But i see what your saying about a 10", but personally ied still go for a 12", its better to suited to everything really and is more versatile

yup but with an 'average' install i normally find that the timing is out and the mids are punching before the sub and it just sounds so out of sync

lol @ those saying different sized subs will suit different music better. This is wrong. A 15 incher can perform just as well as a ten incher, any real woman will tell you that ;) :P
Seriously though size is not important for different types of music. I thought those guys from Talk Audio like myself would know better ;)
Generally,
Dnb/Rnb/Garage - ported enclosure, tuned from around 30-45Hz
Dance/hardcore etc - sealed enclosure for more accurate bass response
ANY size sub will work as good as each other but remember some subs are orientated towards a particular style of sound than others

I never said that :)
And i agree with what you are saying.
I simply said a 12" would probably be best for Graham.

is that not slightly contradicting?

What makes ya say that though Coops?
kineticz
17-12-2007, 02:17

No, the first point is saying sizes are not important, the second says that manufacturers build certain subs with particular aims in mind...
e.g. An RE SX sub is built the same with a 10 inch cone as it is with a 12 inch cone and was built for streetbass, the only difference is bigger cone area = more volume.
In other words, if you owned a 15" sub but thought 'oh well this isn't very good for dance music I'll try a 10" sub of the same model instead' that won't work.

so what would you recommend for dnb n dubstep with long low basslines?
Low basslines = RE Audio Subs in big ass ported boxes 8)

hmmm i was gna do a custom build wit my mate olly witout boxes so that the subs were sort of fixed into the boot. u reckon boxes would be better?
Mate if your gonna have a sub, please put it in a box
And if you dont know why then i suggest getting someone that knows about ICE to do it for you
well you say that, stating different sized subwoofers can suit different types of music better than others, is wrong
and you then say, 'but remember some subs are orientated to a particular style of sound than others'
it just come accross as contradicting itself?
put yourself in grahams shoes, you like music with a fast and sharp bass line. he is not interested in deep low long bass lines. has the option of a smaller 10" sub or a larger 15" sub. which one would you choose and why?

I'd recommend very similar to what I have at the moment mate as I'm into dnb, I have a RE sub as recommended by Coops, it's the SE model though (before I had a RE XXX but had to downgrade for financial reasons :( ) in a ported enclosure but mine is tuned high (around 45hz) and if you're looking for low basslines then I'd suggest tuning it to around 33hz.

Well firstly I would suggest as he is not interested in long deep bass response, go for a sealed enclosure built to the manufacturers recommendation, maybe abit smaller to ensure the bass is tight.
The size he picks depends on mainly the following:
1. Budget? Many 10 inch subs cost less than 15 inchers
2. Boot space? Does he want to stick a small 10 inch sub in the corner of his boot to allow for shopping or is he able to stick a nice 15 incher in the middle for example
3. Does the increase in cone area = greater potential for more volume appeal to him with the 15 incher over the 12?

assume the subs cost the same
assume boot space is not an issue
assume that he is not interested in volume from the 15" as he is only after light bass that gives a kick
which one would you pick? and why?

As he seems the complacent, reserved type then lol I would be inclined to go for the small 10 inch sub.

:( what if u like low long basslines - and punchy bass ? would u have to have a port, and buy a port blocker ?

Nope, I'd build a bandpass box, but I have nowhere near the expertise to design one. I'd get somebody else to design it and I'd build it myself.
