Hey, i've recently fitted an Alpine HU and everything is working fine.

Except, the little fan on the back of the HU isn't spinning. This means that it's getting insanely hot insanely fast, and i can't use it as it will cause a fire. Which i'm not to keen on :P.

It's not the fan is stuck because i can move it just by blowing on it, and the wiring connected to the fan is fine. But then it goes deep inside the unit and i dont really want to take it all apart, because there is no easy access. I'd have to force it open.

Any ideas?

This isn't anything to do with wiring it to the car?

It will not be anything to do with the wiring outside the unit (ISO or CANBUS whichever you have) since the fan will just be run off the 12v and ground rails inside the HU.

Sound like a faulty unit, however remember that most ICE is built to run up to very hot temperatures (just ask Coops what his old Alpine ran at).

Well it was on for about a minute and you couldnt touch the back where the fan was. Is that usual? Shall i leave it to get realllly hot and see if the fan comes on?

Ied of thought the fan would come on when it gets hot.

You might as well leave it and see what happens.

Im sure it will cut out if it gets too hot to protect itself

Yeah, i'll experiment in the morning. But was literally too hot to touch after a minute of playing which is pretty weird for something electronic with a fan :P.

alpine fans should always be on, check wiring and any blockages

Checked all visible wiring, and it's not blocked

I don't have a warranty. Not sure of it's age, bought second hand.

Well it sounds like you got bollocksed by the person you bought it off.

Contact Alpine see if they will fix it for a small fee?

EDIT: Or try find a mate thats a dab hand with a soldering iron?

i dont really want to take it all apart, because there is no easy access. I'd have to force it open.

THERES always a way into the headunit, via screws etc
tbh m8, it seems the best option, then you can trace the tracks & wires to see if any are damaged etc

Or try find a mate thats a dab hand with a soldering iron?
i fixed my mates headunit, it wouldn't accept cd's, motor was bolloxed...replaced n re-soldered...sorted

peice of piss if you know what your doing.

Multi-meter, soldering iron and obviously solder lol.

If your lucky its just something come loose, if your unlucky its something blown. Either way, electronic components are cheaper than chips!

I managed to get it apart and dig out the old souldering iron, it was just one wire that to be honest didn't even seem to be anything to do with the fan had come loose. Probably during transport. It's all back together, and the fan comes on now .

All sorted, it still gets really hot, but then the fan does come on once it reaches temperature. But as someone said i think they are designed to run quite hot.

Cheers guys.
