Wierd HU problem

My car has the standard CD30 headunit but has a strange problem that occurs totally at random.

I can put a CD on or listen to the radio and it may play fine for 10 minutues, 30 minutes, 3 hours......whatever but then it'll sort of stutter. So for example, you'll hear music for a few seconds, then nothing for a few seconds then music and so on. Then it'll put itself right.

Also, when it throws a fit it tends to be unresponsive to control inputs, i.e. steering wheel controls and buttons on actual HU.

Any idea what it could be?

I've checked the connections going into the back of the HU and they seem fine. Fuse is ok.

I used to have a problem in my C, where as the volume would go down very low, and then I couldn't turn it up on the HU, or steering wheel controls. Used to have to leave it about 20 minutes, then it'd work.
