So i have a Mk3 Golf, and TBH the sound isnt very good. I currently have a Sony Xplode HU that came with the car and it hasnt got very many options i can fiddle with. Would changing the headunit for a better one give me better sound quality or am i going to have to change the speakers n the doors, etc.?

the HU doesn't do anything for the quality, speakers are your only option really

Running standard speakers of an aftermarket HU is never going to give of the best quality no matter what car your in. For Corsa's the factory speakers aren't all that bad, but even still... If you want improved SQ your going to have to think bout new speakers (comps, coaxicals, wateva...) and your also going to have to think about amping them. This will give them the ability to perform accurately and efficiently even if u whack your settings right up. It can get far more technical as I'm sure some of the ppl on here will tell you, but bottom of the lline is, SQ will never be great with standard speakers even if u do have an aftermarket HU. Time for speaker upgrade buddy...

Yes it does. A good head unit is the core of any system.

Alpine units always have great SQ.

If you want good quality audio, then you will need to amp your speakers. HU power is naff
