whats good to use that isnt too expensive...and also how heavy is it because if you do say your doors and your boot, how much extra weight will that add to the car and slow it down by, or am i being stupid?

There are many ways of sound proofing. The cheapest is using flashing tape (available from hardware stores). This acts similarly to deadening sheets but is a lot cheaper. The effects are supposedly very good. If there are particular rattles then filling these areas with sponge/ expanding foam etc. (if this is suitable) works well.

I have always gone with dedicated products such as dynamat, second skin and a couple of budget/no name branded sheets. Of all of these Second Skin Damplifier has to be the best.

As for inexpensive, it depends on your budget. Some people wanna spend no more than £10. Others dedicate a couple of hundred to the task. You decide!

Sound deadening material does weigh a fair bit so it will add weight to the car. The more you use the greater the impact. In mine I find its like carrying a small suitcase on board at all times.

Flashing tape is cack for sound deadening, just because it looks the same doesn't mean it has the same properties and purposes. If sound deadening was purely flashing tape it would be priced accordingly.

Dynamat is the most "commercial" and proably the most recognised. Seems expensive for what you spend but works wonders for your system. The extreme ones is the one to go for as it doesn't need to be heated to work with.

SS Damp Pro is very good. Its a lot thicker than Dynamat Xtreme and the effects are better too IMO. Both are very easy to apply.

With regards to flashing tape, I've never used it. My comment above was based on what others on this forum have said about it.

whats the beef with flashing tape lol, i know its not as good as the other stuff but will stop rattles and some vibration. im just under the impression that something is better than nothing like. but i do take your point i know its not as good as the pro stuff but then again its loadsssssssssss cheaper

I had loads of rattles/vibrations in my doors from my components. Had enough it and used Flashing tape - http://www.corsa-c.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=108674

Works very well for me, I used 2 rolls in total and put 2/3 layers all over the door. It seems to have worked for me at a total cost of £15.

Flashing tape

To try and not be pedantic.
"Would you take a toothpick to a gun fight" ???

all flashing tape does is sticks to stuff, it'll stop rattles if it sticks to the thing thats rattling so it holds it still. It has absolutely no sound deadening properties at all.

yes and im not claiming it does, i have said i would have got proper stuff if i had the money, but for people on a budget its better than nothing.

everything has sound deadening properties, and material things are actually quite good, no matter what it is really

I think you will find it does have sound deadening properties, it just may not help with the rattles.

The way the majority of sound deadening works is through mass-loading, this is making the panel heavier by applying mass to it. Becuase of this extra mass, there is more weight to vibrate and therefore takes more energy to vibrate it.

So if you stick the flashing tape to the panel, its adding mass to it and will help to 'deaden' that panel.

Tap a panel without the tape, and it will sound a lot more hollow than one with it applied.

Its not going to be as effective as proper sound deadening sheets, but it will help.

Its this extra solidarity it adds to the panels that improves the response from the speaker. This does not mean it will stop rattles.

I'm sure i saw a rant on another forum about how "imitation" sound deadening was pants, i'll try and find the link but it was a while ago.

I don't deny that yes a piece o ftap on a pnale will sound "more dead" than one without. WHat i was trying to say was that if flashing tape was effective in the first instance then companies like dynamat etc.. would have alot lower prices :\

Yeah theres no way its going to be as good as the real stuff as thats not the purpose its designed for.

There is a lot more technology that goes into the real products such as temerature resistance, application techniques, stickyness, flexibility etc.

Its not going to be anywhere as good as the real stuff, but it does help a bit and is a poor mans solution.

Take a read of this site if your interested in learning about various sound deadening material etc...

Agreed. And with the 3 layers I have used I have had good results :D
