it will run it but nowhere near its potential i dont think, also people say you can damage a sub underpowering it

People are wrong.

As for whether it is suitable, it will depend entirely on USEFUL information. By that I means RMS power ratings, voice coil impedances and amplifier stability ratings.

Look in the manual for the woofer for a power rating like "250W continuous" or "250W R.M.S." and voice coil info such as "Single 4 Ohm" or "Dual 2 Ohm".

Look in the amp manual for ratings like "1 x 50W continuous @ 4 Ohm" or "2 x 100W R.M.S. @ 2 Ohm"

If you don't have the manuals then find the proper model numbers of the pieces of kit and I'll try to find them online.

Its somtimes better to over power a Woofer than it is to underpower one clipped, ive run 3k clean power into single Woofers before and killed a xxx18 with only 1500wrms clipped.........

Some amps and some speakers. It depends on the manufacturer (conservative or fairy-tale testing) and the user (OTT or dire installation).

Good manufacturers will try to be dead on with their estimates.
Some will under-rate as their ratings are more of a definite minimum level which the kit may well exceed.
Bad manufacturers will over-rate to tempt the punters.

The user can give the kit a great power supply, a good installation, lots of fine tuning and treat it well, or...
They can bodge the job and blow the lot to hell.
