View Full Version : Blew my rear speakers today.
Was booming and heard a few pops, my rear speakers started rattling and crackling with every note. They were only a set of the cheap alpine 4" ones, so not expense. I am thinking of getting these instead.

These appear to be good. I'm sure they'll sound mint, what ya reckon? Anybody tried them before as I don't want to waste that much money.

Why would you want to put x-type components in the rear???
What system are you running??
If there for the front, theres better out there for that money.
Best bet is to disconnect em. They are an unecessary expenditure (however cheap) to an ICE install!

Can just see the thinking behind that one.
Expensive----must be good.

agreed
i ripped the rear panels including speakers out of my car and still sounded just as good
True, but are they any good? What would you recomend for the rears as they do make a difference. I have just a sub in the back no 6x9s so want to replace them because the system sounds more balanced.

It doesn't sound as gppd. When they were working, it sounded so much better and balanced with the rears working. Need rears in my opinion. They may only be small but if they are the right spec and stuff you can have good system.

OK to answer your question so you cna be happy.
No they won't fit.
They're components so whats the point? You would use co-ax if anything.
X-Types are awesome if used properly
You need to amp them if you did miraculously fit them
You're wrong, rear speakers only provide a small amount of fill.
Need any more?

Just to add aswell, when i did my system on the astra, i replaced the rear 17cm's with alpine spe-17c2's. Thought they sounded ok with the JL's up front. Then disconnected them, and it sounded better. And thats in a roomier astra that would need more "balance".

Fair enough but I've noticed a difference and prefer to have rears in as well.
I know a person who would be able to fit them in my rear for a price. Then they would sound good as he is a pro.
Do not put components in the rear, if you really insist on it get some coaxials.

Just because he's a pro doesn't mean they'll sound good. Why are people so deluded???
He'll charge you to fit exactly what you give him and you won't have the blindest sense of whether it sounds "good" or not as all you'll hear is noise behind you.
IF you must swap them. Put some cheap(ish) co-ax's in and fade your music slightly more forward than centre.
Decent components up front - amped
Sub in boot - amped
= Good

Concurred.
Deluded?! Nasty comment you made there. Dunno what's your problem, obviously not gettin any, chill mate. :D
Am swappin them anyway as there is too bass much at the back so it sounds a bit bare, just boom boom. Crap! All my mates agree with must having rear speakers, so am putting in another set.

I honestly doubt that your 4" rear speakers are giving a boom boom.
(and the "deluded" part was about people automatically thinking that if a "pro" or so called "pro" does it then it will be fantastic, not directly aimed at you but you as a collective)
They come on for advice and then dont take it, Steve just save it. He's obviously made his mind up on wasting 250 quid on rear components.

Fair enough, but he knows his stuff and would set it up good. Not the speakers giving a boom boom, its the sub, need some mid and trebel because it is too bassy in the back. It sounds ridiculous depending on the front.

For music, there is absolutely no sense in running a quadrophonic system. All CD's are mixed in stereo (we'll forget about SACD's and DVDA's), so there would be no advantage to it. If for whatever reason you watched a lot of films in your car, and your HU was capable of 5.1 audio then yes, better rear speakers would be excellent for surround audio effects.

You still haven't listed your setup so there isn't a way of matching it to the rest of your gear.

I know for a fact that a car sounds to unbalanced in the way of audio when you just have two components and tweeters in the front then just a sub. Sounds **** at back. I am not wasting money, just wanted to know if they were any good or not?

Then please list your setup that you have now or are looking at putting in so that advice can be given that is useable. amping rear speakers honestly isn't worth it.
And how the hell did you blow the alpines
I unhooked my rears for a while but hated how flat it sounded, will be better then I get my amped front speakers though. :)

But you don't sit in the back so surely it doesn't affect you. Admittedly rear fill does compliment a sound system, but with the rite front comps (amped) the rite sub (amped also) you can tweek/balance your system so that you don't blow the brains of your rear passengers with just base but instead balance the car nicely so that one and all can enjoy the sound no co-ax's needed!! These guys know there stuff and are here to save you money/time/bad experiences so that you get the best from your system.
If you really are determined then go for it, but it really wud be a waste of money!
lol, dunno. was playing a track called 26 basslines by benga and they blew. Sounded great until then LMAO. I currently have fusion speakers in the front but am changing them for some alpines in the front. Will be getting two alpine 12" subs soon. I have a sony headunit with 2 preouts. Soon be getting this one to match my blue light interior.

Jak113 couldn't be any more right.
I made the mistakes in my corsa, i ran 6by9's off the headunit on the shelf with a sub.
I thought it sounded amazing and everyone who spoke to me about amping front's and getting rid of rears was talking cr@p.
Then i started working with car audio and did my own install how i was advised and it is miles better.

OK, so if you're looking at alpine comps in the front, get them amped.
twin 12's in the rear will be louder than any co-ax or components you put in so forget rear speakers.
Headunitwise, 828 is OK but there are alot better for the money and with a little more alot more can be gained.

Of course you dont, the woofer cone with components provides mid-bass and mids, and the tweeter provides the highs, and the sub provides the LF bass.

Fair do's m8y, but me and many others will tell you that a good system in a C does not consist of co-ax's whether they be amped or not. It wud be wasted channel(s) on amp, monies, The advice ppl give is to help not hinder m8 but the ultimate decision is urs!

Well tell your bloomin "pro" to stop suggesting components for rears and to go back to sleep.
If you count the above alpine head unit £110
A set of good fornt components like alpine type r
An amp to power them (preferably alpine to keep stuff looking good)
You will probaly come in around £250/£300
Not what would you rather do?? £250 + fitting on rear speakers that you'll NEVER benefit from.
Or £300 and have a sound that will really sound crisp and clean??

cheers for your input mate. i wanna get a good system and would like to keep rears as i feel they do make a difference. Not being awkward, just want to keep the sound in the back as good as in the front.

OK, here's my recommendation
Front speakers:
http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_components.php?comp_id=65
Rear Co-ax:
http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_components.php?comp_id=62
Amp for speakers:

Sub:

Sub amp:
http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_amps.php?amp_id=439
Plus lots of cabling and dynamat. That should be about balanced for you.

LOL! I know, JL audio is so expensive. My mate has it in his fiesta. It is one of the best audio manufacturers though. Have to take a loan out indeed.
*Lolcat at Steveocee's setup recommendation*
By all means go for your co-ax's m8 it seems like you really want em and no matter what advice (however important it maybe, lol;)) is going to change that, but being as its ur car no1 can stop you. You must bear in mind though that ppl on here are really trying to provide you with the best advice for your needs. I'm no expert but since being a member here have found what these guys have to say invaluable. I used to think that 6x9's and rear fill was a "must" for a good sytem, but the error of my ways has been highlighted. Ppl like Steveocee, Coops, jacko103, Ryan etc know everything there is to know about ICE from Coax's to comps to amps to Subs and they pass on thier advice for a reason, to help ppl gain the best from what they have/want to buy/want to spend etc.
you must understand that these guys know a darn sight more than any "pro" in a shop who will flog his gear whether it be alpine, fusion watever and chuck it in ur car, for at the end of the day a , FEE!!!
Ryan enters IASCA sound competitions, Coops can melt faces with his sub and these guys have spent thousands perfecting their systems, and they will ALL tell u co-ax's are an unecessary expenditure.
That money can be put towards SPL comps, JBL budget amps, a GT40 sub and it really would be money much better spent.
Don't think that ppl are here to criticise what you want to do, but if your as passionate about sound as these guys (and me;)) are then listen to what they have to say cos in the long run you shall see sense.
Hope this has cleared things up without having a pop, it is importan just to put things in to perspective though. Happy ICE hunting m8:doublethumbs:
