what you trying to put a hole in if its wood, fibreglass or soft alloy you can use a spade bit around 2-3 quid each. metal or steel either a cone cutter (4-5 quid) or a hole saw as you know there pricey (i got a hole saw set on a company account 12 pieces was 60 odd quid). try flea bay you may get a cheap one there

edit. el-chepo hole saw nothing special but will do the job

ps.If your drilling steel while drilling spray the drill bit with wd40 as it will stop you burnning the bit out.
