Which one?
:D
Something like this perhaps?

Might be able to get the price down a tiny bit as they live near me! So could collect and offer cash!
Really not looking at spending more than that. Not going to be doing LOADS of photography, but want to take some better quality photos of my car and when i go away etc. I bought a Canon IXUS 75 digital camera in November hoping i'd take some good pictures with it. But after playing around with the settings as best i can i still couldn't get the quality i was looking for.
Apologies for the essay!

i have the fujifilm s9600 and its a smashing camera for the price, im thinking about seeling mine soon and moving onto something more expensive, so if you wana buy mine i could possibly sell you it if its what your after,a very good camera to get into photography before going for a dslr
Personally I would try to get a canon. The choice of future compatibility is much greater with additional lenses, battery grips, flashes etc.
Now they are bringing out the 450d you might be able to get a cheap 400d or even 350d (which is what I have and prefer).

Why did i even consider it would be a Mclaren SLR :|
Although the Nikon you posted above looks good, but still I prefer canon over nikon
olympus > nikon d40
everything > nikon d40 actually lol

Yeah the Fujifilm looks good, not that i know what i'm looking for!

Yeah i can't afford to buy one for another month or two anyway mate, so i'll wait around and see if the prices for the 400D and 350D drop! Thank you :D

I wish mate :(

Confused now because of the quote below :(

How come it's so poop?
What would you advise me to get with a budget of £250. I know it isn't all that much to buy one with, but it's all i'll have spare!
Thanks :D
I have used the nikon, and although its not as good (IMO) to canon its a good entry level, cheap slr.
The fuji doesn't have interchangeable lenses or options for extra flashes etc so you are much more restricted.
It depends what you want, using me as an example, i bought a 350d, (well b/day present) and have added to it with additional lenses, and a flash.
If I want to upgrade in the future I can just change the body as the attachments are all compatible.
I would also really consider looking around for a good second hand one. A lot of camera shops will sell as well as ebay. And I reckon you could get yourself a really good deal!!

Yeah i definately want one that i can change the lenses and add/upgrade things.
I'll keep my eye out for both the 350D and 400D over the next couple of months mate :D
you wanna get a nikon d300 there pretty cool!!

Very funny :err:
I have the D40 and as stated it is a cracking lill camera at a reasonable price! would thoroughly recommend if ur looking to keep the budget minimal but the quality and build solid and reliable.

thats not an slr lol
i know, i never said it was, its an slr style, gillen mentioned it in his post though
other than them making them look like an slr so that people who don't know their own name buy them thinking they've got a bargain (not talking bout you brad), then it actually has no benefits apart from lens over a compact digital camera, infact, id rather have a compact

on my s9600 ive taken and compared pictures with my mates nikon d40 and canon eos 400d and to be honest there wasnt alot of difference, i know dslr's are much better quality etc. but if you are just starting photography then its a good camera to get used to manual focusing etc.
So which budget one do you recommend? :look:
:D
you got £300 or less to spend yeah??
i don't really know whats available atm...but i'll have a quick look
after a quick look, havn't looked at specs or anything, just going on what i've heard and know about the manufacturers/cameras.......
cannon 400D
Nikon D80
olympus E-510 or the new E-420
those are the 3 main companies i would look at, anything else is a little obscure regards to quality or buying further lenses etc.

Yeah £300 would be absolute maximum bud.
i would reccomend saving a little longer and buying one of those 3 that i've suggested.
don't do what i did with my wheels and just buy the first thing you can afford :( if id saved a tiny bit more money i'd of had something far far better lol

Canon 400D is a possibility!
The Nikon D80 is £450+ mate :(
Olympus E-510 is £380 delivered :(
The E420 is £350 delivered
Think i'll keep an eye on the Canon's!!!
Cheers mate :D
cannon is good, very popular.
i run an olympus E-500 which is the original of the E-510, and it's a good camera, better than the 420.
honestly any of them 3 i would get, but as i say, don't rush in just cus u can afford a cheap one

I'm in no rush to get one, so i'll be looking around over the next month or two :D

oh i forgot, don't buy one just cus it says 10mp lol.
7mp is the ideal, 5mp<7mp>10mp lol

The 400D is 10.1 mp though, now i'm confooooosed.
mate go for a 350d. it has everything that u will need and should be reasonably cheap now. its out performs my mates nikon d50 and d80!
You dont always need to buy new. Photography is a very expensive hobby. If your not 100% sure you wanna jump in the deep end get a Bridge Camera like Brad. They are very flexible and have very similar high quality sensors like DSLR's. they also have a longer lens range than a standard kit lens for a DLSR but they are not interchangeable.

they don't have a longer lens range, its because they move off optical zoom and onto digital zoom, lowering your quality!!
i would not reccomend anybody to buy a bridge camera, complete waste of money as they devalue so quickly!! if you want a compact buy a compact, if you want an slr buy an slr, if you want to waste money, buy a bridge!!

IMO, for that much, you're best off waiting for the new Canon camera to be released, then the 400D would come down in price, and get one of those.
As stated before, I'd either get a full blown SLR, or just a compact one.
I had a Fuji Finepix S5600, and as much as I liked it, I soon wanted rid for a proper SLR, to get a better zoom lens etc.
So for that much, I'd get something which you can keep, and expand on, instead of getting something you can't. As stated too, second hand is a good option in photography, as it's an expensive hobby.
Second hand is a very good option, especially for lenses. People buy a lense, say a zoom, use it a few times then it sits around, they then sell it! So you can get some real bargains!
Also a lot of people upgrade so there will be lots of things like 350d's and 400d's up for grabs as people move onto either the new model (450d) or up in the range!
Cheers for all the help lads.
Think over the next couple of months i'm just going to keep my eye out for either the 350D or 400D Canon's :D

I bought my 28-90mm lens for about £25 second hand, and it is amazing. The main lens that I use. Amazing, as they're about £200 new.

Might be even worth buying just a body, and then buying a lens, as IMO, the standard lens you get with a 400D is good, but there's some better one's out there to use, like my 28-90mm, I said. Gives you a much further zooming range over the 18-55mm you get with the camera.
Notices some bodies going for about £150-200 before, which'll leave you with £150-200 for a lens, and you can get some for £30-70, so you could even get two, or three.

If I knew what I did now, and was to buy a new camera from scratch, I'd buy the body, and then a lens, or two.

Well it seems to make sense now.
Just been looking at the lenses and bodies individually. Could save myself a fair bit of money here!
I agree. The standard lense I got with my camera I used once, and now its in a box in the loft. Now I have a 28-105mm lense that I use all the time.

Whoop. :)
I love bargain, and saving money.
I use my 28-90mm all of the time, and have a 70-300mm lens too, and these are the only two I'd use, and I only spent about £100 on both of them.

Mine's just in my camera bag, which I'll never use again, unless something goes wrong with my other lens. How's the 28-105mm lens? Was tempted by it, but just went for the 90mm one, as I already had my 70-300mm one lol.
The 28-105 is pretty good, don't get too much distortion at either end. Its got a fantastic focus mechanism, like most decent canon lenses.
I wish I had gone for one with IS now though.
The only bit that can sometimes be annoying is the lack of wide angle. I really want something like a 10-22. But talking mega bucks!
Keith Fusco
06-05-2008, 13:41
I love IS lol.
Yeah, I want a decent wide angle lens too. Been looking at 50mm one's, but not sure. 10-22mm would be lush, but it's all money, money, money!
I have no idea what you two are talking about :(.
Can't wait to get one in the summer and have a play!

IS stands for Image Stabilization. Helps with camera shake, so the image isn't as blurry as it would be.

Ello people, sorry for bringing up an oldish thread lol.
I'm glad i found this actually as i'm in the same position as Gillen! Always taken an interest with photography and always faffed about with my little digital camera's and i really wanna move up a bit.
Is there alot to learn and does it take a while? What i'm trying to say is, is it worth getting an SLR straight away or getting a Fuji Finepix and moving up to an SLR from that? I don't wanna get a Finepix and learn it so quick and think damn i wasted my money and should have got an SLR instead.
Thanks people, hope everyones cool

There's loads to learn, if you want to delve deep into it, or there's a few basics, if you want to start off. IMO, the posibilites are endless for photography, and it's up to the person what pictures are took, and how. The camera only takes you so far.
IMO too, I got a Finepix, and sold it after just under a year to get a SLR, as I learned the basics, and wanted to upgrade, so I could get lenses/filters etc. Depends if you think you'll use it, or not, IMO.
Personally I would try to get a canon. The choice of future compatibility is much greater with additional lenses, battery grips, flashes etc.
Now they are bringing out the 450d you might be able to get a cheap 400d or even 350d (which is what I have and prefer).
was going to suggest the 350d my brother has it still and its a decent camera

thanks for that mate, some good info there.
i'm most probably gonna go for a canon 400D. I've always been quite interested in photography so i might aswell splash out a little bit more if i'm gonna be going for the long run!
Thinking about doing a part time evening course at college to expand my knowledge a bit more. U think thats worth it? Or can the same be done by reading books or learning online?
Thanks

Definately - you can read all the books you like but hands on experience with someone who knows what they are doing is always better IMO.

Books get boring, as you read it all, and eventually it makes no sense. The way I learned, was to just use the camera, and mess around with it to see what was what, and then researched bits and bobs.
