Just a few things I still need to know before I start installing my sub(active sub) (so I can try and do it all in one go)

Does anyone have a picture of the power lead attached to the battery? I havn't actually got the wiring kit yet so wasn't sure how it connects.

Also I know you need to earth the amp behind the back seats somewhere - but never done it before, does anyone have a picture of this too? Does the wire just stick down on the metal or something?

Another thing how do you stop the sub moving around in the boot, will it come with velcro or something?

And the last thing, how should you set up the system (via hu or amp or both?) to achieve the best sound from the sub?

Cheers, Luke

p.s - just remembered another thing, how long should you leave it (i.e how many songs or a certain length of time) before you can start working the sub properly?

Right... Where to start...

-I can take some pics for you tomorrow of the power cable attached to the battery if you want

-Earth = Under screw that hold down back seat... Need a Torx 30 bit - Again I can take a pic if you want

-Won't come with Velco, but most would recommend I think...

-Via Amp, thats what most would say because that is what it is there for!

- IIRC approx 20 hours running it in on low power

I think that has answered your q's Luke :)

Bump this post in the morning so I remember

ok, i'll look out for the pictures ;)

Just got the sub and the wiring kit through today...

http://img98.echo.cx/img98/3432/wires2gz.jpg

In that image, is that smaller black clip thing used to first clamp the smaller blue remote wire, and then clamp itself into the larger fork which then connects to the amp? Because the gap on the larger fork looks too big for the smaller remote wire to go into.

Also, do I need to worry about the phono lead (bottom right) - it's just I couldn't see anywhere for it on the amp? Or is it just the speaker wires on the left, the earth, remote and power I need to worry about.

Thanks in advance, Luke

I litterally this minute just recieved mine

Don't worry about the speaker wire!

I need to know about the remote wire and how to wire it aswell :? I have had a look and I'm not sure... Just need to find out how to do that then Bob's your uncle and I have done mine! Then I will sort out the pics!

And your right! Just the RCA, Power and Remote wire running from front of car (Battery or H/U) and then Ground under seat! Remember to split the power from the other 2 and run them down different sides of the car!

okies! I just managed to get the RCA round through the back of the steering column, what a pain in the arse! Had to get a few panels off for it, just running it down the side under the sills now.

It's neat though, so happy with it ;)

Will I have to split the grommet for the power or can it go through without? Doesn't cutting it let water through?

gooner_47

The remote wire, do you run it with the power or the RCA?

...I just looked at that grommet through to the bumper - it's really tight - I don't think I can get the power cable through there!

Remote wire = With RCA!

You can get the power through!

I have just wired mine all up, but not power :(

Why you got no power Jim? To test your remote signal. lik the 12VDC from the batter y to the remote terminal on the amp with a spare bit of wire. Obviously this will always power the amp, but this is a test.

The remote wire can be run with either cable as it is very low power and does not have any impact on the signals.

I noticed that Sick'y's nice expensive RCA's had a 3rd thin core moulded in the middle, with a flying lead at each end. Only after a few seconds I realised this was made for the remote so you don't have to run a seperate wire ;)

Jim when you say no power what exactly do you mean and how have you tested it???

 Well I wired it all up, then connected the battery back up and no light come on to say that it is recieving power on the amp :( So I double checked all the connections and they are fine... Maybe its because of the earth? Might not have scratched enough paint off?

:x CAN'T GET THE ****ING POWER THROUGH THE GROMMET!!!!!!!!

It's impossible!! It'z just unbelievably tight, I can't push it through :( I'm gonna have to get someone to fit this for me I think

OK, finally managed to get the power through - but still unsure about the connections for the remote wire? Both connecting to the hu and to the amp.

I've got the things shown in the picture above which can go on the ends, can someone help?! Thanks

I wired to remote lead to my ciggy lighter, doesnt matter where you wire it as long as it's a 12v source :) Alot easier than messing about with your hu

Yea  On the back of my headunit, there is a external amplifier connection (Which I had originally had this connected to, but it didnt work) so I tried a different connection that looked like it may work from the handbook :) And it did! So pleased with myself! Just gotta sort some pics of for Gooner after dinner

I replied to your pm Gooner!

Cheers pal, this'll sound stupid too but is there a certain order you need to connect the power to the battery, to the amp etc - if you do it in the wrong order will it give me a shock or something?! lol

Well my Dad told me to disconnect the left terminal of the battery and make sure its not connected! , then you can't give yourself a shock or fuse it or something!

Urm... Good question :? It is NOT the RED ONE nearest the passenger side of the car! SO I'm guessing negative :?

As I said before I think I used a T30 Torx screwdriver, then wedged a flat head underneather and got a stanley knife and got rid of the paint

Hope this helps mate

BTW Thank you to everyone who has helped me out

Thanks for those pics.

Well I got everything hooked up, turned the ignition on... and nothing. No light on the sub. As far as I can tell eveyrhing is how it should be, gonna look at it again in the morning but I don't really have a clue how I can sort this out :( It's probably where I havn't crimped some wires properly somewhere or something like that. Knew I shouldn't have done it myself :(

It took me a few goes to get it right Luke  Don't loose faith!

Make sure all connections are secure first, then make sure earth is ok! Then, try the connection to the headunit  Thats what was wrong with mine!

It's also making a weird sort of ticking noise when I turn on the ignition, almost a beeping noise that seems to be coming from around the hinge of the passenger side door, or behind the side indicator I can't tell.

I don't know if this is linked to what I've been doing today or not but looks like it's another thing not working right now.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Might start a new thread on this actually

2 bits of good news, 1 bit of bad news. Good news is I found out why the amp wasn't powering on, the blue remote lead from my hu has two connections on it, I was using the one to the "Auto-antenna relay control terminal" and not the one for the amp  oops.

So anyway, hooked it up to the right one and now the amp powers on with the ignition. Good news -weirdly enough this also stopped the ticking noise that was coming from the passenger side around the battery area (seperate thread in help and mods about this).

Now for the bad thing, the sub makes a sort of low rumbling, crackling noise when you turn up the dials on it's sub. Even if the music is turned right down from the hu. Have I got the RCA hooked up to the right connection on the hu? It's on the "LOW/SUBWOOFER OUTPUT" channel, other options are "MID/REAR OUTPUT" & "HIGH/FRONT OUTPUT".

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks

where you earthed it!?
seat belts is a good place! make sure if the surface is painted you just sand it down to the metal for a better contact.

have u run down the phono's n power wires down each side!?

gooner_47
16-06-2005, 11:46
I've earthed it as in the pictures above from Jimmy.

And I scratched off the paint with a blade beforehand.

The phonos I didn't use, I've just got power and remote down the passenger side, and the RCA down the right.

it could be the phono leads are getting interference - could be a case of getting double insulated leads??

gooner_47
16-06-2005, 13:28
You mean the RCA's? I'm not using the phono leads, as the RCA goes directly from the hu to the active sub (amp built in).

I don't see how, as it's running on the drivers side all on its own

strange, i always thought Positive was the one to disconnect :? does negative by any chance drain the battery if you take the posertive off?

My power is the only thing going down the passengers side!

ka$h said pg1 it's very low power so doesn't matter which side itz run along though
