Has the other half blown it up? ... sat playing GTA4 last night and it just froze and made a horrific noise. He turned it off and started it up again and it basically kept doing the same. So he put in a different game incase it wads a fault with the game (first time he has played it) and it happened on a couple of other games which we know are fine to play start to finish.
Now there are no red ring of death or anything else.... could it just be overheating due to the position it is in? or is it f*cked? If its the latter then I am guessing there is no repair as it is out of warranty?

not as such, it was hidden behind the tv and said it could have been overheating as he said he had moved all the tv etc around to make room for the ps3 :| I am just going to give it a blast for an hour now whilst the lil un is sleeping see if it happens again. (tv etc has been moved over.)

Did it sound like it was eating the disk? I had mine in the vertical position and sometimes it sounded like it was crunching on the disk, it would speed up then crunch, then speed up and crunch..again, till i turned it off, Mines now horizontal and lays slighty above the floor using coasters, havent had problems since.

The only way I can explain it is if you turn the tv on and its on a not tuned in channel and it makes that horrible scrunchy sound and fuzzy vision. I have tried it again this morning for an hour and there were no problems, so I think it was probably just overheating?

yea i reckon overheating. dont sit it on its fan. keep it ina cool ventilated area .
What ever game you had in there at the time it made the loud noise get that game check the back side of it and see if it has a sort of circle all he way round the disc on the shinny side if it has then you could have a bad dvd drive or xbox was moved whilst playing game. If it has not then it could be a fan issue where the xbox has overheated (not been ventilated enough usually) so the fans have been told to speed up really fast which is the loud noise. Either way if your xbox is less than a year old get it sent off to microsoft for free!

less than 3 yrs old now
extended warranty
check your discs, mine messed one up...
try moving the xbox so it has nothing around it so its got plenty of space(just for testing)
could just be a dodgy cable connection and moving it set it right ?

Ok so I tried it for over an hour today and all is fine. We know it is not the harddrive overheating as he pulled it out and it still did it ... he has pulled the tv across though so the xbox is sat open and I figure it was just overheating. The disc is fine, as are the other few he tried. He has however read somewhere that in some cases this starts and then is followed by the 3 red lights! So if it comes I will just give microsoft a ring.
Thanks
This happened to me, so i sent it off to Microsoft, and its getting fixed now in germany :D
