Im Goign To Be Buyign A New Laptop Very Soon, And Was Wondering Which Do Peopel Think Is Better Mac Or Windows, Thanks
first thing's first
1. What are you going to use it for?
2. Where are you going to use it?
3. What software will you be using?
4. What's your budget like?

etc

then you dont really need a macbook lol
Why pay so much for unimpressive specs (for the money) and a white casing .
Just get a HP or a Toshiba
I had a Windows laptop for uni and it worked well, however I bought a MacBook last year because:
1. Its smaller and neater
2. The Operating System is so much more stable and intuitive, Unix core so mine has NEVER crashed
3. No stupid software to buy, no anti virus or anything like that
4. Stuff just works, i.e. you plug in a pen drive, it works. Plug in a mouse, it works. etc...
5. 8 hours battery life. Enough said.
6. SO much easier to use, really is. Doesn't get you frustrated like a Win PC does
7. Allows me to program using a Unix base terminal
Basically a MacBook is fantastic. I'd never go back to using a Windows PC again unless I was made to.
Trust me, get one.
People look for reasons of why not to buy one
To be honest why wouldn't you buy one.
goign uni this summer so mite need software for my couse but not too sure
What course you doing? If i can manage to do a Computer Science degree using one then I doubt you'll have any software that will cause an issue.

I can guarantee your HP or Toshiba will crash all the time, will frustrate you, constant virus threats, constant reboots and reinstalls of the OS. They are not unimpressive, my macbook is running a core duo 2.16 GHz intel chip and is fast enough to deal with anything you throw at it because its not dealing with ****ty windows its Unix so its always fast. 2GB RAM and a 160GB HDD.
Why wouldn't you get one, boggles the mind people who say you don't need one.
People don't realise how good they are until they use them for a period of time.
see i want a mac but iv used windows my whole life lol
with mac cna u use most software that is usable on windows

I've had a toshiba and a HP.
Never crashed on me once.
The specs are good but you can get more for the same money now.
im going to be studying quantity surveying :)
even though macbooks are better and i would rather have one, i am going to buy a cheaper tosh or something like that for uni, because, to put it bluntly, it aint gonna get nicked
uni is full of pikey students so theres a higher chance of a macbook getting nicked
see i want a mac but iv used windows my whole life lol

Like what software?
You can do anything on a mac, they're easy to use. You can do anything on a mac that you can on a PC, apart from obviously playing high end graphics intensive gaming. But you wouldn't do that on a laptop anyway.

Seriously never crashed? ever? cos if it hasn't then you are the first Windows owner I have ever met who has never had to press ctrl alt delete or any programs ever crashing. It must be a week old.
You have to remember Vista is a heavy use program and thus needs a **** load of hardcore computing power to make it run smoothly. Unix shell is designed to be light on the hardware and to be fast and extremely stable and it is, thus you don't need high power hardware for it to run without a single fault.

My uni's fine, if you look after it then it wont get stolen.
The main reason I got my MacBook was for its 6/8 hours battery life awesome wireless signal and its size. I chuck it in my bag and go to uni and don't have to worry about it running low on power or anything. Its awesome I absolutely love it.

Honestly never lol
Parents have had their HP for years, only ever problem there has been was that the battery pack lost power but not a fault of the actual machine.
I agree Macbooks are good, but i wouldnt pay so much for them.
You can get a toshiba now running Core2 Duo at 2.1, 3mb cache, 3GB ram and a 250GB for about £650 which is much better value than the macbook.
btw, you can get a £300 discount on the apple higher education shop all you have to do it provide your UCAS number. And you also get free 3 year warranty.
Core2 Duo at 2.1, 3mb cache, 3GB ram and a 250GB - £650
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 MB L2 Cache, 2GB SDRAM 667 MHz and a 250GB - £800
I'd 100% get one!
wowo im so excited lol which macbook shall i get or shall i get the pro which size etc :)

i wouldnt pay another £150 for 0.3 GHz and 1GB less ram
I rate them, just wouldnt pay the stupid amount they charge for them.
I AM BUYING A MACBOOK SO WHICH ONE DO I GO FOR NOW :)

I agree to a part.. they're a nice "toy" someone once said to me.
But, the OS is light years ahead of Windows, honestly is, its just sooo much better when you actually use it in the long run.
I AM BUYING A MACBOOK SO WHICH ONE DO I GO FOR NOW :)
lol.. don't let me influence you mind. Just putting my point across.
Mac OS X Leopard????? how can i use widnows on mac
If I was going to buy one I'd go for the middle one of these three
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=MTE3MjE&node=home/shop_mac/family/macbook
Also, order it through this http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/routingpage.html
If it will let you, otherwise give apple a ring and they will grant you the discount or chat to one of their advisers who are constantly online on a chat system in the apple shop section.
Mac OS X Leopard????? how can i use widnows on mac
the operating system is paritioned so you can either use Leopard or Vista
Its an extra £120 for Mac office though
Mac OS X Leopard????? how can i use widnows on mac
leopard is the current OSX that the macs are shipping with.
There are two ways of getting windows on a mac, with either parallels or bootcamp. Both require a copy of windows and a lisence to be purchased, although you can do it for free. But the question is, why do you want Windows!?!? I'd never dream of putting windows on my Mac
You don't need mac office. Use NEO OFFICE instead. its free and does the work awesome, I have mac office, I got it off my mate and just installed it as Macs don't use serial codes you just install what you want.
hmm ok whats th emajor difference between pro and a nromal macbook mate
hmm ok whats th emajor difference between pro and a nromal macbook mate
depends what you will use if for. Battery life is lower on a Pro and its bigger. Pro's are obviosuly more powerful.
MacBooks are neat and will probably do everything you could wish without a struggle at all. I use mine intensivly and it deals with everything fine. IMO pro macs are for proper people who do a lot of CAD or graphic art and music/film editing
For uni i'd get a macbook, higher spec as you can afford.

you need to access it via the university or collage network mate. Won't work otherwise.
Only other way is to ring up and tell them or fax it.

Ah i see mate, makes sense really!
Suppose will either have to wait for uni to start again or give them a ring!
What discount is it you get off?

well mine was about £250 but i think it varies. You get discount off everything except iPods.
I logged into my uni network from home using their VPN connection and then accessed the apple site so got the discount that way.. maybe do that, your uni should allow it.

For the moment, yes. Recently there has been an increase in proof of concept trojans, worms and other malware that exploits security holes in OS X. Dont believe the marketing bull**** - OS X (and Linux, Unix etc) are not 100% immune to everything.
and as for number 4. Are you seriously saying that a mouse or pen drive works better with OS X than Windows
TBH there is very little difference between the two platforms in that respect - any advanced / non-apple hardware will need a driver installed on OS X, just like it would on Windows. Plug in an M-Audio or EMU firewire or USB audio interface and see what happens.
Seriously never crashed? ever? cos if it hasn't then you are the first Windows owner I have ever met who has never had to press ctrl alt delete or any programs ever crashing. It must be a week old.
Been using Windows XP for over 3 years, Vista since a couple of months after its OEM release, and in that time i have never had a major malware infection, and i have not had a serious crash in over 18 months - the last one i had was caused by **** up on my part. :salute: Did i mention i havent run an active AV for months?
I got it off my mate and just installed it as Macs don't use serial codes you just install what you want.
And just a big old EL OH EL at that last part
Is there an Apple Store near you? Or a PC World? have a play on a Macbook and see what you think. If it was my decision, i would go for a non-apple machine as generally you do get more power for your money. If for whatever reason i needed to run OS X then i would just dual boot with XP / Vista. These days you dont need a Mac to have OS X. although OSx86 is not for the faint hearted
Macbook... I recently bought the macbook air... its soooo nice:D
hmm think im goign to stick to macbook :)

:slap: Mac is industry standard. We have talked about this before? Don't make me slap you again.
If I walk into a studio running windows and using M-Audio. I leave, regardless of how much they were going to pay me. lol.
Walk into one running a Mac + ProTools. Luke stays. Luckily I haven't walked into one using a windows Pc yet......ever.
So there is one of those again for you :slap:
Mac for the absolute win. You pay for what you get you cheap skates. You really think your going to pay less and get better? What world do you live in :slap: for all of you aswel.
Mac + Me = :salute:
hmm think im goign to stick to macbook :)
Macbooks are incredible. Everything you will ever need, not crashing, not conflicting, not corrupting... all in a tidy, lightweight, neat 13" package.
wat are the major differences mate
I would never buy a mac due to the following reasons.
White Hat hacking.
you cannot pay with your computer specs to the extent of a windows machine so it cannot be easily customisable.
The way apple will completely control exactly what you can and cant put on it, there is a very big lack of open source software and this disinterests me that i cannot have my favourite programs
They are starting to get more viruses made for them and I feel the complete and utter stupidity of most ignorant mac users will be the downfall of them all.
that last one is more a personal feeling but I can see it happening soon.
I personally would wait till you are at uni and see what software you will be using. My uni uses software that constantly requires hard ware updates to compete with the complexity of advances in microelectronic technology due to this the software is only available on windows, so the upgrades are possible.
people who say macs never crash clearly don't use em enough. when we had 3d cad on our unis macs they would crash regularly on certain points.

Fail at reading comprehension. Where did i mention anything about studio's? I brought up M-Audio sound cards as an example of needing drivers on OS X, and OS X is not industry standard in most corporate environments. Next time, try actually reading what i wrote and replying to that instead of quoting it and going off on something different

You used an example of something used in an industry... I believe studio's are part of the same said industry....so my example is valid
Im pretty sure an M-Audio sound card isn't industry standard in most corporate environments either but you used it as an example!?
And my point was that of course it would work with OS-X!? With less problems than windows as well I might add. And thats not debatable, i've used both. Mac = Less problems with drivers in THESE PARTICULAR EXAMPLES.
That's fair enough mate, good on you. :doublethumbs:

Yeah fair point. Can I have your paypal addy please so I can pop £500 in there and get a PC that rivals my Macbook out of it?
Also I need a garuntee it will never crash.
I dont want an OS that uses more disk space than is in it.
And I don't want a firewall continually running and owning my cpu.
In answer to this poor guys question, I half agree with Nutkin. Wait and see what course you are doing and what is needed. If all is good and it doesn't really matter. Get a mac DEFINATELY. They are so much better all round and you will never use PC again.
The "nothing is compatible with them" argument PC users had for mac was pretty good in the 90's.
Its redundant now.

Have you heard of Linux its like this new OS that never crashes and is virus free. i think they made a special version for old people called MAK or something.

 Ok I give you that, linux is pretty good. But now we are back to compatibility issues. Its basically the least used OS of the three majors.

You ****ting me?
Linux is the most used in business LMAO
I bring you back to your lack of computer knowlege.
Almost every internet server will be running linux, Most companies will have there own custom form of linux.
Vauxhall have there own form of Linux/unix for parts ordering lol. take a look next time your there at there software.

They were three separate examples mate. I also said corporate environments - studios are not corporate environments. recording and design studio's form a very small percentage of the market, so small as to be insignificant. The vast majority of companies will be running XP Pro workstations and Windows Server and Linux servers.
I never said M-Audio were industry standard, i was simply using them as an example of needing drivers on OS X. I was simply 'proving' that OS X does need drivers for any non standard hardware, just like Windows does. In fact, EVERY OS needs drivers of some sort.

Whats the difference between a macbook and a macbook pro?
Whats the difference between a macbook and a macbook pro?
more powerful processor, larger hard drive and dedicated graphics card. All in all a better/faster machine.
cons are its larger, battery life is a lot less and it weighs more.
I taught Navajo everything he needs to know about macs.

windows laptop i would get
to be fair id basicly look at my needs if all you need is internet and msn etc then it doesnt matter what you get and for ease of use id probably get a mac.
the screens are very nice and as it uses its generic drivers you aint gonna have any probs
But if your going to uni you may need some windows only software etc and then you will end up with a windows pc anyway so sit and wait i would.
Well if in the very unlikely event you do need windows software, just use the uni lab computers for a week or install parallels.
Thanks For Your Help Guys Just Got My Mac Book :) Its Wicked Lol And I Got The Top Spec :)

macbook FTW, i always used to use windows xp, which is fine but windows vista is a shambles. If you compare leopard with vista, leopard defiantly comes out on top. It looks nicer and feels nicer.
Then again i heard that windows vista now comes with a free downgrade to windows xp (Y).
If you want a gaming pc, your better off getting a desktop rather than a laptop.
I reckon macbook pro or the black macbook.
I have the black macbook and i'd much rather use it than anything else.
Macbook owners should back up all of their data on a reg.
I still havent repaired mine yet lol
Im thinking of getting a laptop and now im pursuded(sp) towards a macbook! Can i access the shared folders on windows pcs? also can i print from the mac to a printer connected to a windows pc? also can you use msn on a mac?
Cheers for any help mucho appricaited!
