Hi all,

As I've been reading through this site a lot of people ask for examples of boot builds. I've just finished my first attempt so I thought I'd upload the pictures to add my ten penneth worth. I wanted more boot space than just having a box sitting in the middle, so here goes !

Comments welcome.

Original "Throw it in to get music" install

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub2.jpg

I found this link and copied their design - I know my idea is not orignal, but theirs works, so why re-invent th wheel !

http://www.icecavern.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1822&hl=becky's+leon (http://www.icecavern.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1822&hl=becky%27s+leon)

So I set about taping in the space above the near side rear wheel with 2 layers of masking tape

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub3.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub4.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub5.jpg

The started with the fiberglass, 2 layers in there and a few hours to dry

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub6.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub7.jpg

Pull the whole thing out the car after its dry and pull off what masking tape I could and left it to dry overnight

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub8.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub9.jpg

After adding another 8 layers of fiberglass I tried it back in the car to make sure it still fitted and it was a tight fit

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub10.jpg

OK so far so good, time to add the front panel. I know I didnt use 18mm MDF, but as its only an 800w sub going in there with a 600W amp running it, its not going to shake ( well thats the plan anyway - only time will tell )

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub11.jpg

Cut the hole fof the sub and trim down the fiberglass, I used mastic to hold it there while cutting to stop the MDF moving, that was later removed

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub12.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub13.jpg

Trimmed and the front now held with more masking tape to seal up the inside

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub14.jpg

Sealer removed and then the gaps filled with resin and sanded down

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub15.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub16.jpg

Test fitting of the cable and the speaker, put the cable into the corner so its hidden by the back seat

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub17.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub18.jpg

Road test before carpeting, to make sure it still fits and I've not done something wrong

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub19.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub20.jpg

It fits and it works so final stage is carpeting

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub21.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/Sub22.jpg

Amp install :

Again I didnt want the amps screwed to the back of the seats or the hassle of putting in a false floor, so after a few thoughts while sitting on the train I came up with the following idea. It covers up the jack, but I can also still get to the spare wheel.

First it was measure the space I had n the drivers side and cut the wood to suit

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp1.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp2.jpg

I already had 2 amps that I got bought years ago, they still work and got told "you can't spend any money on amps, so you will have to make do" so fitted them

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp3.jpg

Dont know where this " appeared from" ;)

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp4.jpg

What it all looks like together, maskingtape is holding the carpet while its drying

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp5.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp6.jpg

First attempt at fitting into the car

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp7.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp8.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp9.jpg

Dont like the gap above the amps, so need to do something about that

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp10.jpg

Finally fitted into place

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp11.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm125/ultimawhistler/amp12.jpg

Ignore the speakers on the MDF in the middle, they are for another project in the car, but if they are in the car, they dont get seen and I dont have to answer questions !

And yes I'm henpecked ! lol

I thought of 1 either side as well, but the petrol ( or in my case diesel ) tube cuts the space down to fit another there, or if you follow the design from Becky and Leons design you could fit 1 in as the speakers would be angled.

They arent that difficult to build, just fidly and time consuming. That is my first attempt at fiberglassing. If I can do it - anyone can.

wow i love this boot build you should make n sell them everyone would by one they are so practical..... maybe suggest them bars across the sub front to stop stuff banging into them....

how much would ucharge to make the boxes n amp stands ;)

Not a bad install. Personally I might have considered hiding those old amps inside the right box and just have put the JBL on show and flat. I might have also tried to think about the cables everywhere, but seriously not bad at all.

that is a really good idea, turned out so well, well impressed, if i can ever be assed i may do that!
saves so much room in the boot!

i like that :doublethumbs: this might sound stupid but... how do you stop the fibre glass stickng to the tape?

^^^ you don't mate!
most of the tape will come off with the fibreglass! but your car will be fine underneath!

and i agree with jacko, the sub box is very well done but the amp rack would be better without the random angled bit! i think you should redo that side and hide the two cheap amps and put the nice jbl one on display flat!

I know what you mean about the amp stand, in the drawings I made it looked as though it was going to turn out well, but in reality it looks pants lol. Currently building something else that goes across the back of the seats with the amps behind clear perspex. The sub doesnt move once its in, but I like the idea now of putting bars across the sub to protect it.

Cheers for the comments

like the sub idea mate, but agreed about the amps, something should be done, maybe two slanted stands, one infront of the other like this only with another in front instead of amp on the floor

(ignore sony stuff, it shall be changed someday :woops::lol:)

leaving you half a boot to play with but only problem is you'd need a false floor and the added problem of your spare wheel, i just took mine out lol

just adding to your list of options :D

I've got to find some bars first, something like drawer handles ( only larger ) as they already have the screw holes in them or errrrr dunno yet. But thats a definate suggestion now.

As for making them for people, I wouldnt know what to charge tbh. I saw a link on here ages ago for a company that makes a box to fit on the left hand side, but for the life of me cant find it again. If I do i'll link back to it.

Always looking for ideas mate. Thinking of just squaring the boot off with the amps behind a panel against the back seats, then wont need a false floor, just trim the carpet around what I already have.

No problems it was from ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360076578728&ih=023&category=72278&ssPageName=STORE:PROMOBOX:NEWLIST#LIST

Although I bought the same as the above I had loads left over and still have more, so you might want to go for the 5meters of the matt instead of 10.

Hope that helps ?

Great idea on the install , would do this once i have the time. hardest bit looks like when attaching the mdf board to the fibreglass. This should be in tutorials :doublethumbs:

Its not that difficult to attach tbh. Cut the wood slighlty bigger than the fiberglass only by a saw blade thickness, then you can seal it on the inside. Once its sealed I used fiberglass over the top for extra strength.

Yes makes sense to cover in fibreglass once sealed . good job!

What dont you understand ?

Yes there is a bin bag there as I couldnt find any decent plastic. When you start to use fiberglass the resin soaks through the masking tape, so unless you want the whole thing to stick to all the plastic of the car while your letting it dry, its best to use that or tin foil works just as well.

It was a while ago i did that build so try this link - same company

ultimawhistler

so how did you secure the bag behind the masking tape and fg to the car?

used a few bags. stick 1 to the car, then stick the other to the car, then stick the 3rd over the top so that it over laps the 1st 2.
Then using another bag from that across the boot floor and another across the back of the seat overlapping the ones you've stuck in the space over the rear wheel.

Its really hard to explain.

Hope it makes sense though ?

What size sub is it you have in there? and was there plenty of room for it?

ultimawhistler
29-11-2008, 11:00
12" sub and loads of room to fit it. If you need bigger then just angle the sub at the front.

And as for making them, I'm sure i read somewhere that boot cards are different on different cars, so its taking a template from each car type before i could even consider making them. The materials are dead cheap about £60 all in ( roughly ) but its just the labour cost and shipping thats going to break it.

i would have thought all boot's are the same shape on the same models, as there all gona built in a factory :S unless someone has a hand built corsa lol :)

Just something I read the rear quarter panels are different, but if someone can confirm or deny this 100% please let me know and I might consider making these.

Cheers for the comment
