New PS3 firmware 2.4 details leak
Tuesday 24-Jun-2008 10:00 AM Could be released as soon as next week...
A supposed Sony employee has leaked new details for the much-anticipated 2.4 firmware update for PS3.

As well as the expected in-game messaging and trophy features, the in-game XMB (Xross Media Bar) access is also said to allow you to play music during gameplay - a much-requested feature already supported by Xbox 360.

The GameFAQS poster, going by the alias Knight613 (claiming to work in R&D at Sony's Foster City branch) also says that, although you'll only have access to a limited number of the XMB's features while a game is running, you will also be able to set up Bluetooth devices, so getting your wireless headset set up won't require you to quit out. In addition, they say that it'll be released some time next week.

A picture of the new trophy screen was also posted, and to prove he isn't just a spotted teenager with a taste for lies, Knight613 also posted a snap of his office pass. That settles it, then. You're fired!

Of course Sony isn't commenting on any of it, leaving us to guess instead.

On a side note, Sony warns that the PSN will be down today from 8am to 2pm pacific time (4pm to 12am GMT) for "scheduled maintenance". That means no access to the PS Store, and no online gaming.

Could this be related to the looming firmware update? Let's hope so.

Quote:
CVG has managed to get its grubby hands on the final list of features for the hotly anticipated Firmware 2.4 update, which was yesterday rumoured to be due early next week. But that's not the case we've been told...

Update: Since our original story went live, we've received further information regarding the inclusion of trophies in the 2.4 update. As expected full 2D trophy support will be in the XMB update and there will be four types: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Platinum is only awarded when you have collected all other trophies in a game. Also there are no gamer points, it's all done via a levelling up system. Think Call of Duty 4 levelling up system, we reckon. Update Out

Speaking under strict conditions of anonymity, a source has told CVG that Firmware 2.4 is expected to launch in around three weeks' time. A quick look at the diary reveals that E3 is just under three weeks away. It doesn't take a genius to see that Sony's pre-E3 conference would be the perfect time to launch the Sony XMB assault.

Announcing something and making it available at the same time is the way forward, as Microsoft proved by revealing Doom isn't just coming to Xbox Live Arcade, it's on Xbox Live Arcade a few E3s ago. Apple is known for this approach too.

We've also scooped the following list of XMB features that you'll be able to access in-game. Here goes:

Manage downloads

Set the vibration feature of the controller

Sign in to PlayStation Network

Register friends

Manage Bluetooth devices

Terminate the game

Music category

Use the system BGM

Work the system BGM operation panel

Settings category

Game category

Set audio devices

Use the voice changer

As previously reported the update will also allow you to play back your own tunes in-game from the XMB Music column. It's unclear whether this feature will be compatible with all games or just new titles created with more recent development tools.

The system BGM will offer functions such as Play, Stop, Previous track, Next track, Change repeat mode, Change shuffle mode, Change volume (five levels). When you stop the playback of your tunes, playback of the game music will then begin.

Sony has yet to confirm or deny any of this and won't comment on rumour and speculation. If you ask us though, this is bang on the money. Not long to wait and see...

The PS3 is soon becoming the superior console

They charge because their service is much better than Sonys offering.

Dont get me wrong, Live is great! But the margin between the two sevices is getting smaller!!

So tell me why you or anyone else should pay for the same service that we get for free?!

You Pay to play online, whereas we dont!

Think about it! You pay to play GTA4 online.......................PS3 owners dont! Why is this?

I know what your saying, but the Live service is still undeniably better than PSN. Given time MS will have to rethink their price plans and strategies because overall the PS3 will EVENTUALLY reign supreme IMO. It is a much better console but is lacking content at the moment.

Apparently the update has been bricking a lot of consoles. Seriously now, do Sony even test this stuff before its released, every firmware update seems to be followed by stories of broken consoles, what were all the delays for if they wernt testing the thing out.

I think ima leave my ps3 off until a fix is released!

Sony FTL.

For the record they dont break consoles, more of a firmware problem than hardware.
Sony giving you brand new consoles if they break ftw.
XBOX supplying you with the same one tat ends up breaking again ftl.

More importantly you not owning one of them ftl too :P

Actually, any 360 that is repaired by MS now will be equipped with the new motherboard which does not suffer from the 3 red light fault ;)

your fighting a losing battle sticking up for the 360 on this forum!!!

its just ps3 bias!

they seem to want to pay more money for lesser console!

When you gotta pay to play online :P ?
AND if you compare the console that was out at the time of he PS3, the xbox premium being the top one, that even though it was meant to be premium lacked some things like inbuilt wireless and a proper hdmi port for true hd viewing.
I'm sure the price of live every year will soon outweigh the one off payment for the PS3, even if i got mine on the day of release and paid through the nose for it :( .

i can honestly say, xbox 360 is the biggest pile of **** ever. No HD port to go with my HD tv, no wireless to get with my wireless internet, pay to play to go with my empty bank account. Oh and also forever crashing to go with my lack of patience.

Ehh, tbh the PS3 is technically superior. If i could get anywhere near the £250 my X360 cost when i got it, i would sell it and get a PS3. If i could afford both, i would have both. As i cant do it either way, i'll stick with my 360 for now

Your TV not got component then? or did you cheap out and get an arcade? also a VGA cable provides an analogue high definition connection. Wireless is absolutely terrible for gaming anyway ;)

sHq
03-07-2008, 20:40
I think Microsoft pretty much p*ssed on their customers by releasing the ''arcade'' with a hdmi port, which is meant to be the entry level console in the 360 range, whilst having people with premium consoles having to cope with the closest they'd get to HD with a component cable, I think the xbox era is about to end. Sure while it was here without all the problems it was pretty good, but i can't see it going too far now, it's disc technology it tried to adapt (HD-DVD which with the first consoles you needed to fork out even more to buy a drive to play the discs with) backed out the race with blu-ray, as they seized production of players a bit ago. Yes, maybe they could adapt the blu ray discs to another console, but for the 360 it looks like very soon it will hit it's end.

Gazza_DJ
03-07-2008, 20:41
sHq, what do you mean closest? the component cable IS HD.

sHq
03-07-2008, 20:42
It won't do 1080p.
1080p is the true HD.

Gazza_DJ
03-07-2008, 20:46
Its still high definition though isnt it? in fact, anything over standard TV / DVD resolution is High Definition. True HD isnt a standard as such, more a marketing word for 1080p.

sHq
03-07-2008, 20:51
but you see there is actually a different in the way the 1080i and 1080p is shown. It's kinda hard to explain, the 1080i picture is made of the vertical lines i think really close, where as the 1080p is more a crosshatch with the screen having more detail. Like 1080i leaves the persons eyes to make out the gaps between the pixel lines, whereas 1080p is more filled and creates a better image.

Not sure if that makes sense but ah well

Still, I got my ps3 because of the actual hdmi port so I could put my tv to proper usage.

Gazza_DJ
03-07-2008, 20:54
I know full well the difference between interlaced and progessive mate, im just saying that True HD is not a standard, it is just a marketing term for 1080p.

So your TV is 1080p then? see, there are still more 720p/1080i TV's on the market than 1080p TVs, and not every game is actually 1080p. In fact, i would think there are more 720p or 1080i games than 1080p games.

sHq
03-07-2008, 20:59
I totally agree with you there, but never the less I make more use of the console with blu-ray films aswell. I have noticed quite a few games switching down to a low resolution when you start the game, and yes my TV is 1080p. I ain't trying to argue with you like though either.

Gazza_DJ
03-07-2008, 21:04
well, if yo are bluray-ing it up, PS3 is the only way, even over standalone players in the same price bracket IMO

large Internal storage, network connection and the ability for Sony to add new codecs / update codecs easily makes it a futureproof player :doublethumbs:

sHq
03-07-2008, 21:08
Yup and even at the time when Sony was taking the michael getting the PS3 to Europe,I considered looking at the price of standalone players then and they were through the roof so I hung on for the PS3 to come out.
I am actually glad I did aswell :)
