Well I think you need a disc mate, however, depends how new it is. Computers made in the 1-2 years now come with a recovery partition that you can reboot it from. Go into My Computer and see if there's a harddrive there besides your usual C drive (mines D drive) and should be called recovery. IF not you'll need the disc.

sHq - often the recovery partition is hidden, so it may not show up in My Computer. usually, you have to tap an F key at startup to access it.

ooo, didn't know that.
On my pc it shows up, and on my dad's laptop.
Either way you'll now know if you've got one or not.
I think it's usually f10 or 11, but it should say at the bottom of the screen.

Yeah, it varies a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer. Chances are if you didnt get disks, you have a recovery partition though.

Theres another way to do it called "system recovery". This is a way to do it through your windows interface. Think you get it through start - accessories - system tools.

If you dont want to completely flatten it back to manufacturers, you could always do a "system restore" where you put the computer back to a specific date or "restore point".

If I were you I would do system recovery - it works a treat.

If flattening it doesnt make it any faster then you could have some hardware issues i.e processor has overheated etc This is quite common on laptops if you use it on your bed where the vent can be covered up.

Hope thats some help mate

System recovery is poop.

agreed - in my experience it can cause worse problems than it fixes.

How about trying a simple defrag?

I have had the (mis)fortune of working with plenty of computers, and i have NEVER seen a 'System Recovery' option in that location, only System Restore:

Which is ****.

tbh system restore probably wont have the effect you looking for. just ask someone for a lend of their xp disc and reinstall it using the key on the side fo your computer. that way its basicallly like having a new computer

Just had a look on mine and cant seem to find it - although it definately exists cause I used it on my old phillips laptop that was fooked.

It basically put the computer back to manufacturers standard - not just a restore as it went through the "phillips set up"

Got a dell now and cant see it

Sounds like a philips only thing. I dont know of any other manufacturer that has that - they either promt you to make recovery discs or have a recovery partition, usually by tapping F10/F11/F12 at boot.

Recovery discs are the best option, as a recovery partition is useless if your partition table becomes corrupted.
