: New m.o.t law

I heard the other day from a mechanic at TAC (Total Auto Care, m.o.t garage) that there is now a new law regarding exhaust noise. If your exhaust is noticeably louder than OEM your car will fail m.o.t.

Just a pre-warning for those of you with a loud exhaust and an M.O.T due

there is a db restriction on exhausts for road cars but i'm not sure what it is exactly, i don't think they seem to enforce it that much - i reckon most you'll get is a warning off a policeman if he thinks its too loud

Surely that's a bit open to interpretation, sure there's a decibel limit....

I think this is tosh personally

i had a kwak z550 chop a year or too back and that failed because the exhaust was "louder than a standard system in similar condition" even though it was a pre 1982 bike and therefore exempt from the silencing laws!!!!

this has always been there and if an mot station doesn't like you or the car or are out to make a quick buck they can use this to fail it.

the computers don't have a decibel meter, it's all up to the tester to decide how loud it is. you tend to find garages where the tester is an old boy will pass nearly any exhaust coz the guy's been around power tools for so long he's half deaf lol. it's the younger guys who can and will fail them.

even though you get free re-tests?
tbh if this does exist it wil be at the desgretion of the MOT station...

also i thort the decibel level was 101db?
mate of mine had a CRX with the most rediculous exhaust i have ever hear.... literealy was silly loud... and it made it through no problems!

free retest are only technically if you leave the vehicle there for repair. if you take it away the can let you off with half price retest if its within a fortnight i think.

I used to work at a scooter dealer and was very friendly with the local test centre. and the buggers still failed it.

matt... your exhaust.... is it a boomstick with standered center silencer in place?

free retest depends on who does it. some places will do a free one within two weeks, even if you do take the car away.
