I found this out to day, after getting anoyed at my auto leads wheel adpaters for my pioneer mp8- head unit. I have now found out that when i turn my neons on the extra power drain casue the forward buttion to stop working all together, this happends occasion with out them on but will not work at all, or only when you put ur foot down (more current is genrated for the alternator) will it work properly

So jsut in case any one is thinking of doing this or has this and wonders y its dodgy its because this.

recomendations:

Get the acturly wheel adpters from your manfucture (harder to buy, but they will work more effectively)
When installing neons or other current draining items, maybe consider puting a power cap on for the whole system
Be aware that simlar problems might occer
This has been anoying me for the last 3 mounths hope it helps :)

WEll I have to disagree with you there on the two relevant points you are trying to make.

1st off, I have a new astra, and the HU manufactureres don't directly make a lead for the CanBUS interface, they designed the other hald to Autoleads adapter, so you don't always have the choice, and also the manufacturers are in on it anyway.

2nd, When installing ANY additional electrical items in a car you should ALWAYS take a clean supply from the battery and fuse it next to the battery. This way you are not imposing on an other circuits in the car.

One thing that really is frustrating is amateurs thinking it's simply volts that makes things run. As an electrical engineer, I appreciate the fact that it's current that makes circuits work. The design engineers when creating the car calculate the requirements for a circuit and size cable and fuses accordingly. These are then meant to be left alone.

Everyone's an electrician when it comes to cars, but half the people would seriously scare me wiring a 3 pin plug.

There is more current in parts of your car than runs through the whole of your house. Current is what kills, not volts. I have been working with voltages upto 2000V, but these were safe as they were limited to very small current and therefore won't have killed me, but even at 12V, the current in a car can kill.

Therefore my advice is, if you are adding anything and are competant to do so, supply it direct with a fuse in the right place.
