1. If you don't know what you are doing, ask someone who does (who isn't your mate.)
2. If you are buying new equipment, shop around. Chances are somewhere will have it on sale.
3. If you are buying new equipment, consider purchasing from a shop instead of eBay. Chances are they will do you a deal on install and if you try installing it yourself, you'll just take it there after you ****up :)
4. If you are buying used equipment, make sure you test it before you hand over your hard earned.
5. Don't be a victim of marketing. Let your ears do the listening.
6. The goal in sound quality is to re-create a live performance. That means sound coming from the front, not the rear.
7. Sub-bass (ie below 150Hz) is omnidirectional, meaning you can't tell where its coming from.
8. Use heatshrink and solder around all connections. It lasts longer than electrical tape.
9. If you can't lift it off, chances are theres another screw holding it in somewhere.
10. 6x9s are bad.
11. Before you cut/drill, have a thought about how much the panel will cost to replace when you decide to sell the car.
12. Before you cut/drill, have a think about anything that may be beneath your target (wires, fuel tank, etc).
13. Only spend $2000 on a A/V source if you have $1500 minimum in speakers.
14. A multichannel amplifier will do as good a job at multiple two-channels.
15. "Digital" amps are bull****.
16. Spend as much money on equipment as you can. It will save you buying and reselling later (at a loss).
17. If you can't afford what you want at once, do it bit by bit. See above.
18. Never fit coaxials/triaxial speakers if you can fit components.
19. Never judge a subwoofer by its diameter.
20. A lot of salesmen will only sell you what has the biggest margin.
21. 5.1 Surround Sound is totally useless in anything smaller than a Caddillac.
22. You don't need a capacitor to stop your lights from dimming.
23. You drive from the front and passengers sit in the back seat, so do you really care how good it sounds back there?
24. Fibreglass is itchy: wear gloves.
25. Solder burns eyelids: wear protective glasses.
26. If you don't know what AC/DC is take the car to a professional. And I'm not talking about Thunderstruck.
27. If you hear a buzzing noise, chances are you have a dodgy earth. Strip the point of any paint and make sure its a solid metal connection to the chassis itself.
28. http://www.bcae1.com is your new bedside reading.
29. Before you offer advice, make sure its based on your own experience, not what your mate told you.
30. Everything can be done on a budget, providing you allocate your funds accordingly.
31. Invest in a Torx bits set before you work on a Corsa.
32. Oxygen-free copper is oxygen-free copper. There is absolutely no audible difference between the quality of speaker cable.
33. If you are going to upgrade (eg add another sub in 3 months time) make sure you plan ahead now.
34. Perfect Preperation Prevents Poor Performance.
35. Try to allocate your money as follows, most expensive to least expensive:
a) Speakers
b) Headunit
c) Subwoofer
d) Amplifier
e) Cabling
36. Having lots of stickers on your car says "Please Steal Me."
37. Don't underestimate the power of sound deadening/damping materials.
38. A 3db increase is recognised by the human ear as a doubling in volume.
39. Rattles are not cool; they sound louder outside the car.
40. Above 140db can stop your heart, so boom safely.
41. Once you lose your hearing, you can't get it back.
42. High frequencies do more damage to your body than low frequencies at the same volume.
43. Sticking your head in the boot at full volume can make you ill; subbass can disorientate your inner-ear much like sea sickness.
44. Remember to use the crossover filter wisely.
45. Subwoofers should be low-passed at 150Hz. They are not meant to play higher.
46. A gain control is not a volume control.
47. Power = heat so make sure your amplifiers have plenty of room to breathe.
48. If you take care of your equipment it will last forever.
49. Attend local sound quality and sound-off competitions, you will be amazed at what you learn.
50. If your subwoofer doesn't sound good, alter the cubic volume and try other boxes before you buy another subwoofer.
