View Full Version : Amp deactivating during songs

For some reason my amp will deactivate during a song obviously meaning the sub won't blast out the music, so i have to switch the headunit on and off for it to activate again, but a few seconds/minutes later it happens again.

It's worked fine for over the past year, cables are connected up fine as well :dontknow:

hmm...

does the amp cut out i take it, it doesnt just fade away?

have you have checked ALL connections?

have you been playing your amp hard at any point? As this creates heat which can causes amps to shut off if they get too hot, and can lead to them being fooked.

what set up are you running? Do u have one sub or two?

is it a really have bass song this might cause the amp to overheat / clip.

it sounds like the amp is going into prtection mode when clipping of th signal occurs modern amps tend to shut down to help protect the speakers they are powering.

i assume it only stops working on high volume and is fine on lower levels??

try turning the gain on the amp down a touch an see if that helps or reduce / turn off any bass enhancement settings on the head unit (like alpines media expander)

this is what i was trying to say. You have to be very carefull with "bass boost" and all these types of dials, they have CLIPPING wrote all over it

As far as i can hear it just cuts out, from the green light on the amp to red. Sometimes i don't even notice!

I never really blast it out cos the types of songs i listen to don't have much bass to be blasted without the vocals being at the same volume.

I have the Fusion FEW12PK Amp / Sub (easy now, i got it at staff discount when i first got the car and it was cheap!), it's been in the car since the end of 2004.

Won't work at any sound level whether it's minimum or maximum :dontknow:

Ahh, good thinking with the amp dial, i'll give that a try later on..

its more than likely the amp is ****d

the same thing happend when i had 1 of them a while back, checkd connections, changed fuses but still the amp would work sometimes but was normally dead, took it back to halfords n they replaced the amp

red light. look in your manual, or go to there website and download it if youve lost it.

redlight on my amp means it's cut off before it blows sub up.

tell me your gains are no higher than 1/2 way round.................

check the fuse on the amp and in your power cable if they are ok make sure no other wires are shorted by others and if this seems to b ok then disconnect all wires part from ground, power, remote and turn the amp on if the red light still on send it back to where u bought it

Hmmm, wouldn't suprise me if it's on its way out, i've had it for years and it's Fusion

Ahh, wouldn't want that to happen! Especially if it means the car going up in flames :o

I'll check the dial in a bit

I doubt they'll care - i've had it since Nov 2004, don't think it's still under warrenty :look:

but if the fuse was too small then the current drawn would pop it. The fuse is passive not active, meaing it works fine until the limt of ie 80amps is exceeded

Good thinking, however i'm thinking it's the power cable, looks pretty dodgy under the bonnet.

Basically ignore any reference to fuses! A fuse is either there or it's not. It's purpose it to protect against overlod and will blow and disconnect the ciruit in that instance. If it's complete and staying that way then it has nothing to do with it!

Your amp is overloading or overheating. It enters a shutdown state to preserve itself from doing any damage.

Many cases of overload are caused by poor connections, particularly on the earth rather than the main power.

If it has been fine before and is starting to play up, I suggest removing all power and earth connections and cleaning them with some snadpaper or wire wool. replace all connection but add a anti-rattle (star) washer in each connection to get a better bite on the connection and to stop the vibrations working it loose in future.

My amp used to do that sometimes, and the problem was a **** earth connection. Check ya earth connection and make sure its only touching the metal and not paint and make sure the connection is strong, after I earthed my amp better, the cutting out stopped
