Ok I will be switching early april (exchange goes 8meg)
So which isp's are good, I dont mind if they have a Sustainable usages policy so long as it isnt as pathetic as plusnets and not constantly moving the goalposts
Looking at pipex so far... any others?

pipex have a 5gb cap on usenet usage then it costs maor. It's even more gay then +net. Mind you I managed over 100GB last month without any penatly or problem :P
Freedom2Surf are the way forward if you are wanting to change.

bt are quite good i have them running 8mb and have no restrictions or fair usage policy, but my step dad is a BT engineer :look:
I say Pipex...
- However I think Ka$h does mean in general.... as I have been with them a couple of years now and always use newsgroups through a company called newshosting.com - However lately even going through them its been slow :(
- Then again my net speed is also slower than it used to be...
Pain in the arse really would still recomend them... however had you looked at madasafish they are cheap and supposed to be good?? Lots of ideas on adslguide.org :D

I use newshosting too :) therefore wouldnt need to use an isp's newsgroup server but seems more and more are limiting.
A day sitting on adslguide for me I think.
Yeah like I said always been mega fast.. but last night was getting 35kb a sec on my 2mb line which is normaly at, at least 185kb. Its not good at all!
Now I dont know if thats Pipex Limiting, Pipex Having Problems, or Newshosting having problems??
HOWEVER Pipex have not contacted me or anything to say.... erm.. you are using too much etc.. etc.. - so :dontknow:

newshosting was fine with me last time I used it (last week before I got capped again because plusnet decided to say you can only download 12am-8am
PlusNet really do sound crap!!! :(

Gone down the ****ter recently, had a right arguement with them last week it seems no-one in that place understands there usage policy yet very quick to cap you
Just had a call from Chan that our net wasnt working...
- Talked her through logging onto the router etc... and it was down as disconected on the Pipex connection... she had to press reconnec for it to work again.
Keeps doing this everyday and is doing my fooking head in :x

what make router you got?
if theres an option for reconect after certain time period just set it to like 15seconds ;)
D-Link DSL-G604T
- http://www.d-link.co.uk/?go=jN7uAYLx/oIJaWVUDLYZU93ygJVYKuJQSNvhLPG3yV3oVo57l74tNZwiMqJ t7A==
Im sure that option is on :(
there is an option to Reconnect after disconnected, 2 or 3 D-link routers ive looked at had that turned off by default, might wanna check to see if thats there/on mate

Hmm not sure with d-links
I know linksys have an option to either disconnect when idle after certain time period or keep alive and reconnect after so many seconds of dead line.
And my netgear just never goes wrong :D
not a fan of d-link stuff it must be said :|
I got a Zoom single port eithernet router (goes to a 16 port HP proper hub :D) and never have any problems with that either :)

In the 18 months ive been with them, only ever had 1 problem where I lost complete internet connectivity to them. Apart from that sweet as a nut :)

Something must be wrong with your connection noonster, I'm on Pipex and i've never had any problems. I get 240-245 kb/sec most times, never experienced anything much slower tbh.
oh and for Andy - Its only usenet thats capped on Pipex, nothing else is :)
Nonny,
Looking in the manual (ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dsl_routers_modems/dsl-g604t/DSL-G604T_Install_Guides.pdf) for your router (Page 3) there is a Keep alive option which should be set to 10 minutes by default (might be wise to set that to 1 minute)

a-ha just found it
Newsgroup Access
All PIPEX Solo ADSL services (except Solo 250 & Lite Products) include access to Usenet News services (setup instructions are available from the Technical Support section).
As standard all Solo services (except Solo 250 & Lite Products) have a monthly news download limit of 10GB which resets on the first day of each calendar month.
All customers can purchase additional download capacity at the rate of £2.00 (inc. VAT) for each additional 5GB of download. Your news download speed may also be increased when you purchase additional capacity, if this is possible within the constraints of your connection and the news service overall.
Once purchased, an increase in download capacity will normally take effect within a couple of hours and the charge will appear on your next service bill from PIPEX.
Customers can purchase increases in download capacity at any time, even before you run out of your current download allowance, but please bear in mind that your download allowance (and download speed) are reset at the start of each calendar month and any allowance unused at this time will be lost as part of this reset process.
then
How do I set up my software to use newsgroups?
For PIPEX-supported newsreader software, please visit the MyPIPEX Support Pages, to be found at URL:
https://www.mypipex.net/solo/support/
Login using your PIPEX Xtreme username and password (or click "Skip Login" if you are a PIPEX DIAL customer) and, from the drop-down menu, choose first "News", then "Set up a news client", then "PC", "Mac OS9" or "Mac OSX" as appropriate, then choose the software you will be using, then click "Continue" to view the setup guide. If you are a PIPEX DIAL customer, just change the news server name nntp.dsl.pipex.com to news.dial.pipex.com, and don't choose the option to log on to your news server. Apart from that, all you need to do differently is to use your PIPEX DIAL e-mail address e.g. zzz99@dial.pipex.com in place of the zzz99@dsl.pipex.com examples shown.
For other newsreader software, please refer to the appropriate software help pages or other available help resources.
looks like it just their newsgroup servers that are capped :)

Hmmm will look into this further as dont want to winding changing isps 3 times in a year :|
This Thread has a Title... just cleared out some posts - how about we keep on the subject in future ;)
Hmmm well I am downloading through newshosting (using Pipex) at the moment and I am getting 150kb - 180kb... thats on my 2mb connection with nothing else using it but me!
Soooo something has got to be wrong :(
Right so thought I would set it up to use the Pipex Newsgroup instead of newshosting and check the speed.
Newshosting | 150kb-185kb (About 2/3 mins ago)
Pipex | 105kb - 148kb (Right Now)
Thinking its more of a connection problem and defo something do do with Pipex :(

Daz - BT been playing around with lines in your road or anything recently? my old line speed problems started after that
Do a few speed tests on various websites (adslguide etc) could be limitation on newsgroup ports.

True you should be getting over 200kbps. Could just be a bunch of download junkies in your neighbourhood now, ooor you have winded up being throttled :|
:( - Hope not...
Just looking at that one MHerbert is one
- http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/ispinfo.asp?isp=dcomms Some info there on them on the adslguide site - however the prices are wrong on there!!
They look good and offer special deals for people who migrate in
- http://www.dcomms.co.uk/cgi-bin/adsl/package_list.php?package_type=4
Its cheaper than their normal price if you migrate... just gonna search for some reviews on them that people have had etc...

- When I did an availability check with someone I got this...
Your exchange has ADSL broadband.
Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate of 1Mbps, 512Kbps or 256Kbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.
Thank you for your interest
However I am on 2mb at the min - but as you saw from my results getting speeds of around a 1.5mb line so maybe I cant handle 2mb??

Aye but you have been ok with 2meg for ages? Seems strange. but i'd say you wont be getting 8meg anytime soon :(
