cjgmotor

i never use both only one and it depends on the weather this time off year a good wax but in the summer it has to be the polish.

EVB

Do you just literally pour it out onto cloth or something and continually rub it :?

Marc
30-03-2006, 15:42
yer i wack a splodge on cloth then wipe on to the car. then with a different clean cloth i polish it in till it sparkles

for polish the best thin i've found is to go by a mop from halfords brings it up a treat.

Clemy
30-03-2006, 15:45
u polish the car one day and wax it the next
this way the polish keeps the paint work nice and shine
and the wax protect the paint work from crap off the road

so that's basically the meguiars 3 stage thing right? clean, polish then wax?

whats happens when you come to wash the car again, do u need to use all three again?

also wondered, meguiars have the foam applicator pads, and that terry towel thing, which would you use for each bit, i.e each step, and to put on and take off the stuff?

SXi-Dan
30-03-2006, 16:05
put on with the pad, buff off with the towel

Phil
30-03-2006, 16:05
Car wash? or a good valet?

gooner_47
30-03-2006, 16:06

diff pad for each of the three steps? or will it not matter that much

SXi-Dan
30-03-2006, 16:10
well to wash it your want to use a sponge or wash mitt, and id use 1 pad for pollish and one for wax

Marc
30-03-2006, 16:11
and when drying use a leather shammy

Clemy
30-03-2006, 16:12
meguiars 3 stage right!
it depend wot u think ur car needs
if it need a goodgoing over do all three
if it just needs a polish then just do stage 2 (polish) and stage 3 (wax)
if ur just looking to protect your car for the elements just wax will do

ok, scenario:

last week you did the three stage, it's now dirty again. If you wash it (btw which wash mitt is better the microfibre or the lambs wool one?) does it take any of the wax/polish off that you put on before?

Merguirs do some 'detailing swabs' like posh cotton buds for that problem. My dad uses them on his motorbike.

To fully clean my exterior I -

Sponge wheels with warm water and Merguirs soft gel
Rinse, use Microfibre wash mit and Merguirs Nxt Gen car wash. rinse again
Use Autoglym synthetic chamois
Use Autoglym fastglass and Merguirs window cloth
Use Autoglym bumper gel on arches
Use Merguirs tire spray on DRY tires
Then to polish, wax

Apply with Mreguirs foam pad then buff off with cotton Terry towel, then run over with a Microfibre (gets stubbon polish marks off better) and finally a quick wipe over with Merguirs Ultimate wipe.

See why I can't be arsed polishing it?!?

ok, found softwash - just used instead of shampoo in the water yea? will the gold class car wash take off the wax?

NeilRocks
30-03-2006, 16:31
Soft wash and Gold class won't srtip wax protection. Think it says on the bottle. If anything it helps rejuvinate it!

gooner_47
30-03-2006, 16:33
ok cool i'll just get the gold class instead of soft wash then

i use auto glym resin polish... should i wax after using that?

Polish brings out a deeper shine but does not offer a good protection level. Wax is a harder compund designed to combat the elements.

Polish - Deeper shine
Wax - Deep shine but protection

I've found Super Resin is very easy to buff off too. And Merguirs stuff is a pain

Clemy
30-03-2006, 17:42
POLISH - give the car a shire if the paint work is dull

WAX - just think of this as protecting barer from treesapmist, air pollution, airborne salts and acid rain

NeilRocks

Use polish as a nice buff up before a show etc. Not always a need to wax after polishing (upto personal preference) BUT wax every 6 weeks then every month in the winter for full protection.

slugger
30-03-2006, 19:58
Ok polish is a very mild form of rubbing compound!! You should always wax the car after polishing it, like a few hours later, or the following day if your not gonna drive it as this adds a layer of protection to the paint work.

If you dont then you dont have anything protecting your paintwork and you will have to polish your paint each time you wash it.

I would suggest only using polish maybe 3-4 times a year, or if you need to remove any light swirl marks. I polish mine twice a year, wash it at least once if not twice a week, but only use wax maybe every second or third wash.

The whole idea of waxing your car is a) to hide some small light scratches, and b) to protect your paintwork (because water will bead off and dirt wont stick to it) and to make it easier to clean.

I can get my car filthy but 20 minute wash and dry and it will look perfect again becuase the dirt just lifts straight off the wax.

slugger
30-03-2006, 20:00
Its also a good idea to wax your alloys, sounds stupid but it makes them so much easier to clean as brake dust just comes straight off!!

You can get really anal when it comes to washing your car, my mate has a stunning black clio 182, and he polishes it 3 times a year, but after polishing it applies 4 layers of wax!! Madness if you ask me, but it does look awesome and its so easy to clean!

it damages the paint work

it only damages paintwork if it has a detergent in it...

I agree with slugger, you're only meant to polish 3-4 times a year as it actually removes a very slight layer of paint, to remove imperfections.

I really like your car chasirmsher, very nicely modded!
