Are 6x9s any good?
6x9s are better than standard speakers. However, this does not mean that they are the best things out there, and are cetainly not better than other speakers available...

A sub AND 6x9s
6x9s play "bass, mid bass and treble" a sub plays "bass".
Having a 12" woofer (for example) and the bass from the 6x9s (a much smaller woofer) will sound awful. You will have two different sized woofers trying to play the same note :\

Do i need an amp for 6x9s
No amp is needed, but amping is prefered for ANY speakers. Cutting the speaker wire going to the rear speakers, and attaching this to the 6x9 is fine. You will get a a sound amplified by the internal amps in you headunit.
Amping them will sound better as you get more control over the sound going to the 6x9s. The amplifier is also only running these 6x9s, so has nothing else to work/power- unlie the internal HU amps, which have EVERY car speaker to work :tumb.

Having 6x9s in the parcel shelf and a sub in the boot
This is also asking for trouble... the sub will push/move lots of air- this air will "move" the 6x9s woofer, and make them sound distorted.

Having 6x9s in the parcel shelf with no sub in the boot
as previously mentioned, 6x9s play bass mid and treble... for the best experience- you want the sound going in your ears...

a sub produces low notes/frequencies - these sounds are "wide" and "spread out" meaning you can face the sub in pretty much any direction for the same sound.
a mid bass driver - produces mid bass - "medium frequencies" these have to be aimed at your ears slightly more, as the frequencies are a bit higher, this means they need to be aimed a bit better, as they are narrower.
a tweeter - produces high frequencies - this is the narrowest sound angle, meaning they have to be aimed almost perfectly at your ears for the best experience...

so:
imagine a sub as a living room ceiling light...
a mid as a torch...
a tweeter as a lazer beam...

now back to the question: you want your face to be lit up by the light dont you? well putting these three lights in the parcel shelf isnt going to do much is it? it will light up the car roof, and you dont sit here, so it wont sound very good...

solution: components can be positioned anywhere you want- and can indeed light up your face :) as for the sub, although this CAN be faced anywhere, many people recomend aiming it at your boot window - so the sound reflects/bounces to you in the front

Why do so many people have 6x9s then?

Simply, becasue you get bass, mid bass and treble for very little money... they are good for a budget system- if they are left on there own they are better than standard speakers, and will make an improvement. But people get carried away and start buying subs also... 6x9s are regually called and reffered to as "the poor mans Sub"

Conclusion

if you want a slightly better sound, 6x9s will help. just dont do any more.
if you want a much improved sound, you'll need to spend lots more on components and a sub.

Hope this helps those all to common questions. if i've missed anything, feederfan corsacmatt, derbyboyred, vince, please add it in :P

think you hit the nail on the head mate. plus if you got speakers in your shelf everyone knows when you park it up, but if you got a sub, with a standard parcel shelf and dont coming booming into the car park then its prob less likely to be acquired by a chav.

Agree 100%. People please read this and more importantly believe this. We don't say it because we are in a "I hate 6x9's" gang, infact some are very very good, but we say it because its true.

Some people do use 6x9's with a sub, but if they know anything about audio they will use them for a specific reason i.e. they may drive with people in the back and want some rear fill. However I bet they will set them up so that they dont share any air space with the sub and they will probably run them at only 20-30% of there full potential (faded). I would say that 90% (IF NOT MORE) do NOT need 6x9's.

PLEASE REMEMBER SUB, COMPS, H/U & EITHER 1 OR 2 AMPS MAKE THE BEST SYSTEM SETUP.

Great work Martin

i'm going to change my headunit and speakers, and was thinking of 6x9's on the back parcel shelf.

instead i think i'll put components in the doors, and a sub in the boot :)

this sounds like it will be better

So much of that is wrong it's unreal. Every statement you have read can be pulled apart sooooooo much.

It's a good start, but by no way is it the whole truth!

your right dont go 6x9s, the comps and sub will be miles better look at any high level car stereo (i mean high level SQ contests not high level MAX power types) and they will have speakers upfront and subs in the back

Agreed, pictures should be added too, I don't mind re-doing this with pictures to show effects etc.. or if Martin wants to whatever. Just think some picutres will show people exactly 'what goes on' with 6x9's.

if you have front and rear comps in replacement of the standard speakers and a sub in the boot will you have enough treble coming from them?

Yeah i see why people dont like 6x9's as such
But ive got them, but TBF to me, they came as a package with the Headunit so i might as well make use of them, i know they dont improve the system in any way, as im running 2 subs in the boot as well, but the speakers in the back of a corsa are very poor, so gives them something to listen to when i have people in the back
Thats the way i look at it :)

I'm dieing to listen to this as you keep saying it, i'd be interested to know what 'sweet' sounds like.

Yeah thats typical, people get 6x9s and rave about them, yet when they hear a proper sound system they soon realise that they were talking ****e before

Still relevant tho
