I am only gauging interest at the minute about this, i am in the market for a machine polisher, it is called a porter cable and is 100% safe for novices although i have had a lot of previous experience with one. i am thinking about starting up again and doing peoples cars. Basically if you have the dreaded swirl marks or light scratches this will remove all of that leaving your paint in better condition than when it left the dealer, the results you get are truly amazing.
A bodyshop would charge approx £80 up wards depending on what you wanted done with the paint and they still wouldnt make as good a job. I was thinking about starting around the £50 mark obviously depending on the size of the car and the severity of the swirls and scratches etc but £50 would be a good base.
Would anyone be interested in this kind of treatment for their paintwork??

No change the halfords ones would get swirls/scratchs out.

I would only use the halfords one to apply some wax maybe but NOTHING else

Its not a bad price but you may wanna consider doing a layer of wax aswell as the polishing?

I do everything for that price mate, i wash the car using a lambswool washmit and the two bucket method to avoid further scratches, i the claybar the whole car to get the tar and contaminents off the paint, i then use a paint cleaner to further clean the paint, after that stage you are ready to apply the first polishing compound which is slightly abrasive to remove the swirls, after the polish i then put a glaze on the car and after the glaze a good quality wax is used to seal in all the hard work. The results are truly amazing.

what cutting compound would you be using and what mop head?
i dont know bout you but you have gota be sure that you wont "catch and edge" as it takes milliseconds to got through the paint to bare metal, this doesnt happen often but if u did u could have a large repair bill, the only gurentee u have with a bodyshop is that if they do this then they can sort it out where as u cant unless u have the facilities.

Im not trying to ruin anything for you as i also do this for my mates but just warning you, good luck though!

There is no way you can get the desired finish by hand, there is no point compairing hand polishing to machine.

As for the paint on the edges of the car, i use a porter cable polisher which has a bearing on the head which angles to suit the panels on the car so there almost no chance that will happen mate, i know what you are talking about though but this generally happens when you use a rotary polisher which spins at a constant speed and doesnt have a variable angle bearing.

This take the best part of a day to do right mate and go through all the stages so going to shows etc would only get one car done or two at a push.
