I did the fronts yesterday and started on rear today. After a good 45 minutes I gave up because the nut wouldn't budge at all after using various spanners, molegrips and plenty of WD40. It has rusted on good and proper.

What could I use to slightly loosen it so a spanner will turn the nut?

which nut are you strugglin with the 1 at the bottom of the shocker? if so this is a external torx head and will require a specal socket to fit it. when you have the socket get a decent sized ratchet or strong arm to get plenty of leverage on it and it should come undone. hope this helps

you want a socket size E20, and get a power bar on the case that will undo it. well i did mine!!

It took us flippin' ages to get that off too... in fact there is a picture of trying to get a wrench off of the nut because we'd tried to grip it so tight it got stuck on :)

It comes off after some blood and sweat!
