Hi guys,

What would be the best thing to do:

1) Rip out the old standard rear coaxial speakers and replace them for some good speakers.

2) Leave the standard speakers in.

3) Buy a stealth shelf put some 17cm coaxial or conponent speakers. Bearing in mind i will have a sub in the boot.

What plan would get me the best sound? I want to do everything properly first time in my new SRi when i get it.

Regards

Chris

best way of doing it is 2 just unplug the rear standards speakers.

then get some good components for the front, and a good sub. accompanied by good amps and u will have a gr8 system.

rear comps really arent needed.

i am d/c my rears and running 6" 3-ways in the rear, with 6" components in the front and 2 x12" subs!

i dont understand how ppl can say u dont need rears!!!???!!!

surround sound is sooo much better than just front noise and rear bass!

Dont neccessarily mean conponents for the rear.

well it depends what you are listening to CD's are only stereo so only have a right and left channel so you only need the front ones and bass in the boot

its the ago old debate as to what is best

personally i have no rear speakers but if i were to get some i would prob put in there a decet set of coaxial for some rear fill, i would not invest in expensive comps for the back

you beat me to it, unless you are listening to DVDs in the car there is no need for "surround" speakers

this just leads to a confusing sound stage

with just good fronts the sound stage is forward and up high as it should be, imo at least

no.. but they are plugged into a dolby 7.1 surround sound processor, and it sends the correct sound, to the correct speaker, at the correct time. your stereo headunit will play left to right...

and just to make you look even more stupid, there is a japanesse speaker unit which sits under the TV, and you tell it the shape of the room, and where you are sitting etc - and it bounces all the sound off of the appropriate walls to give you surround sound.

so surround sound from all the speakers in front of you... i'll post a link to a video of how it works later as its on my favourites...

dont try and own me in the ICE section mate ;)

exactly.. i know about ICE - not vauxhall parts :P

i belive they are secured into the rear panel anyway, so removing them would mean cutting plastic, and fitting new ones in is a very big job as it involves removing the entire panel.

you'll better of snipping wires and re running them to some much nicer placed coaxils.

fair play

are the speakers not a seimens part tho? - as the headunit is. kind of an incar entertainment part then??? - gotcha!! :)

Martin

i have no idea who makes them.. the speakers face is made from toilet paper, as soon as i saw that i threw them out, no furthur inspection need IMO :P

ok mate, simple knowledge non ICE related

you have to get a better sound having noise in front of you and from behind you...

compared to just in front of you!

even with the stock set-up, anyone can try it...

fade your speakers just to the front and listen, then fade back to both and the sound difference is amazing!

pretty simple facts :)

24-10-2006, 16:24
i have changed the rear speakers as someone pointed out but i dont use them

i have a set of 5.25" coaxials in there the standard ones are 4" as i recall

changing them in the standard location is a pain i would get a stealth shelf made if you are intent on changing the rears

more of a beifit is gained by instead of spending £500 on fronts, and £500 on rears - it is better to spend £1000 on fronts alone. as you are facing forward, and you ears pick up what is infront of you, not what is behind you. this is why you face people when they tlk to you :P

car manufacturers no nothing about ice.

go to any good ice installation company n i gurantee they will say good front comps and a sub is by far the best set up

The reason is so people in the back can hear and it dorwn out the exhaust/wind noise so it doesnt sound as loud, so you get a better review when the car is being evaluated before sale.

When you build an instal, you build it for your self, not your passengers...

music is directional. the higher the freq, the narror the sound beam. why on earth would you want tweeters in the rear firing at nothing?

and speakers are only put there as people expect them there. look at the quality in ANY car, between front and rears. i say this as i had a job where i had to spend a great deal of timing planning/desining the front speaker set up in our latest car. the rears are just plonked in where ever there is room ;)

please stop arguing, or i will continue to rip every response you have into pieces :)

£1000 on front speakers is not joke. people who are interested in sound would quite happily spend this. my front speaker set up in total nealry hit the £950 mark.

maybe put a box over the back of them anyway. free air speakers sound awful, whack a box around them and you wont believe the punch you can get from it ;)

if you dont care about your passengers in the back hearing any vocals just go for fronts and sub if you do care about them hearing vocals and not just base get urself some 6x9 simple!

Martin

so would you recomend running both 6x9s and a sub then Sean mate?

i have never had a problem running 6x9's and a sub but as the guy said it is down to personal preferences and as i said if you dont care about people in the back hearing anything but base do the comps and sub simple!

Just Incredible
05-11-2006, 18:34
On a note i would like to add that i think the whole front comps and sub in the back is kinda pointless, i say this because if u have people sitting at the back they wont know the quality of the sound coming from the comps as the position they are placed makes in less noticable in quality than the people sitting in front

me personally if i had the money i would just invest in front comps and rear comps

the clarity of sound would be so much better for anyone whos sat in the vehicle

05-11-2006, 19:56
what ppl are saying is that they dont care about the people in the back enough to spend good money on components for somewhere they are never going to sit

Haha this thread made me laugh.

I started off my ICE with a jvc headunit and just a set of 6x9s in the back instead of rear speakers. and it was a big improvement over the standard and I thought it was the mutts nuts.

Then I got a bit of money and bought a pair of front components, replaced the fronts and WOW I was even more amazed at the step up in quality.

I then sold my 6x9s and bought a nice sub and 2channel amp and faded all the mids and highs to the front, i was amazed at the sound quality.

I then decided id push the boat out so i bought a 4 channel amp and hooked up the front components. I turned it on for the first time and the experience was awesome, clarity and good quality at high volume as well as at low volume.

However I found myself wondering what it would sound like with rear speakers as well?

So i bought a pair of 6x9s and hooked them back up instead of the OEM rear speakers, i put a pair of bass blockers on them so i only got highs and mids, faded my sound system to rear and....

All that happened was I couldnt hear the music over the sub. mids and trebles lost volume and all was lost under a sea of bass.

So in conclusion, I found out that Sub + 4 channel amp + Front comps was the best sound setup to my ears. The 6x9s are now sat in the shed, with the bass blockers, and my Fader is permanatly set to FRONT + 6.

All my gear is £70-£150 Infinity and JBL stuff, and my headunit is a JVC £120 job, despite this the improvement over standard is astronomical. I can only dream of what Martin's must have sounded like.
Also, I don't give a stuff about passengers, its my car and my sound system will be set up for ME and no-one else. This is why I won't waste money on DVD systems, its pointless if I can't watch them, everyone else can be bored or buy a PSP.

Anyway that's my view of it. I didnt want an install for shows etc etc, I just wanted the best ice setup but on a students budget, and I can safely say that I am over the moon with it, and sound deadening is yet to come.......

CrA!G
06-11-2006, 10:28
simple

just want good sound for you, spend all your £ on front comps, amp and sub.

if you want people in the back to have a minor difference (not many rly notice or care) then get some coax's in the back. you could get 6x9s but they use some of the power for bass too... and when you have a good sub, whats the need!

think the guy that started the thread wanted 2 know if its worth changing the rear speakers, answer = no, get a stealth shelf and fit sum coax's or dont bother imo ;)
