Hi,

Im after some (if any!) information about how to split facelift headlights. Im going to be doing it over the next couple of weeks so i can paint them, but i just want to now if theres anything i should be looking out for. Are they easy enough to pull apart? Do you need to use a heat gun at all?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, i know its not a common mod cos its a tricky one, but its worth a shot!

Cheers

If I don't find out through being informed, i'll be taking a facelift headlight i'm in possession of with a scuffed lense... taking it apart... smoking it... and sharing the information on how :)

All in the means of research.

I know one person won't be happy about that lol :P

What's difficult about this, I've split around 30 sets of headlights and they are really easy, hardest one was splitting a set of MK4 genuine Xenon headlights as they cost £275 each and if I ruined them I was going to be mad but I've split 2 pairs of these now and it's not that hard.

Looking for a set of facelift headlights right now to split, going to colour code the backing lens to match my daughters Sapphire Black, I'll then fit a set of 6K HIDs in them, fit them and then split her old ones and flog em on E-Bay.

Even done a couple of sets of red colour coded ones, look nice when fitted.

howd you do it, and you got pics of the red ones?

No sorry I don't think I took any pics of the red ones, after a while you don't bother with pics as they are common place for you so you don't think they are out of the ordinary.

As for how to split them, you put them in an oven, the bonding glue melts and the lens can then be removed. It can be very messy as the bonding glue is black and it can melt like cheese so it can get everywhere. Plus as soon as it gets cool it starts to solidify so you need to work fast or you'll snap the lens catches as it starts to hold again.

Fairly easy to do once you've done one set. You just need nerves of steel the first time as you'd swear the headlight will melt in the oven :)

Any chance you fancy writing up a tutorial for us all please, with picture ect, when you do your daughters ones?! Thanks ;)

Yeah not a problem. I understand that this is treading on the toes on Combatprojex but it's not exactly a secret how to do this, I've known this for years, However not everyone will be competent enough (or brave enough) to do the mod and he will still get business from those who aren't.

Plus the more it becomes a must have mod the more demand there will be for this mod so his business should increase not decrease. If I was him I'd wait until asked for a colour before spraying them, so he could do red ones for red cars etc, not everyone wants black even though it does look nice. Tha's just my thoughts on the matter I don't for a minute think to give him instructions, just advice.

itd be great if you could do the tutorial. it aint treading on anyones toes, as it isnt copyrighted or anything. dont understand why anyone else hasnt made a tutorial yet. its just another mod like any, should be more than one person doing it as it creates a monopoly otherwise

He has been on about doing colour codes for people but no one's been brave enough to do it yet.

I don't know about others but I'd rather pay the money and get Glenn to do it as I know he'll do a top job. Also if he messes them up he's a top bloke so I'm sure he'd replace them for you wheras if you balls it up yourself then you're f*cked. Also when you consider the time involved and the cost of the paint I'd say his price was aa fair one.

f people want to take the risk in doing it themselves then that's fair enough :)

yeh but theres obviously more than one person able to do it. theres only one person doing the lights, just how theres one person selling the led switches. thing is theres other ppl who can do them to, so ppl who cant do it themselves can choose whether to buy them ready made or attempt it themselves. i bought some ready made about a year ago, then they broke, so i did my own ones. it was easy and i tell people how to do them if they ask in the modifications section. by only having one person doing them, with no advice on how to do them, it creates a monopoly as ppl think they cant do it themselves and HAVE to go to combatprojex if they want those lights.

I agree with all that, if you don't feel competent enough to have a crack yourself then please pay someone who is, it's no good thinking you can do this and end up with lights you have ruined, saying that there is nothing in the mod which I'd say 60% of the members couldn't do themselves. The other 40% can pay someone else to do them.

I do LOADS of mod, the vast majority of them are mods I've seen done and asked how it was done, I've then attempted the mod myself, I'm lucky that I'm very good with my hands but more importantly I'm very good with my brain, I've improved on almost all the mods to some extent, however the biggest thing and the most important one is LOOK before you attempt, study what your trying to do. It's no good taking the light out of the oven and then looking to see where all the catches are, find them first, study how they work, when your working with a red hot light and even hotter glue you don't want to waste time working things out.

The monoploy situation is also valid, if only one member knows the secret then supply is extremely limited, I do LED conversions, I'm not bigheaded when I say that they are amongst the best out there, if not the best, however even if you took one of my mods apart you would be very very lucky to copy it, it has taken me hundreds of hours and hundreds of pounds to get the materials I use to creat my mods, you could copy them if you could find everything I use but it would take you as long as it took me. Plus I don't charge over the odds, I spend 3 days converting an Astra G headlight switch, it had 17 LEDs in it and I charged £25 for doing that, at least 12 hours went into that, £2 a hour, that's not even minimum wage :) but I do them because I like to do them, (well not the headlight switch, it's a bitch to do :) ) the more people who can do this mod the better it becomes, someone could stumble onto a trick no ones even considered, I thought I'd install a halo ring in my daughters just to see if I could, easy when your good with LEDs, something like that.
