: Not going into first or second.

Hello.

Recently my car has been struggling to go into first or second gear. 3rd, 4th and 5th all slide in nice and easily, but to get 1st and 2nd you really have to force it.

Sometimes even have to try and pull away in third. Which is embarassing.

Any ideas?:doublethumbs:

Linkage?

your gear linkage is buggered. You need to go to vxl and get them to replace the plastic joint with a metal one so hopefully it wont happen again soon.

its a common thing unfortunatley.

it costs about 150 i think.

Just to let anyone know really...

I bought the part from http://www.vauxallparts.co.uk/

Entire new gear linkage. Not the plastic one either. And gear selector pin for £46.00 including delivery. Local garage fitted it for £25 (hours labour)

Give that a go if you get the same problem! Cheaper than Vauxhall direct. :)

Vaux only charge 98 all in for that one so you still saved money, but it aint all that bad in the first place. Just a shame it's such a common crap design fault!

Mine struggles with second sometimes. Usually when going down the box, not up. It used to happen on my B, must be a common fault.

Cheers,

yes it defo is covered under warrarnty. cause it was a disign fault on ealier cars to have the ball and cup as tw odifferent materials, plastic and metal, instead of the same material. When you get it changed they should put in a metal set up. Yes i know i shouldnt use the word metal, and should instead say WHAT type of metal, but i dont know. and i dont care lol

The new metal one is a lot stronger... so once you get that on you shouldn't get any more problems - it was a poor fault but with the new one it shouldn't come back.

I got mine done for hardly anything

i think the quikshift linkage for £30 may cure this too, plus you get tighter shifting.

rob2083
09-02-2007, 11:44
took mine to a small garage near me. new linkage was £48+vat and an hours labour so im looking at about £90 altogether which beats taking it to vx monkeys. i think im gonna sell the corsa soon tho :( too unreliable.

Hi guys, I also had my gear linkage changed recently (now have the metal version).
While shifting in and out of second is now better, I wouldn't say it's perfect. I've clocked up approx. 46000 miles. I've started to wonder whether the problem partly lies with my style of shifting, perhaps I pull the gear stick too hard to the left when getting into second, or maybe not enough.

Mine has only started playing up past few days too, really fooking annoying - took it to the garage behind me and he said £40 will do the job - well pleased.

he also said its a common fault and that it can get worse than just not being able to get into gears, he said if i didnt get her done soon i would be going into 3rd and the car would think its in 2nd (for example) so getting her done next week!

Update on mine i took it in last Friday and all they did was re sync the gears, they said to take is easy for a few 100miles to let it settle back in. My reply was - "ok thanks, well if it doesn't cure the problem then i'll be bringing it back and you will be giving me a cover car while you replace the linkage!"

Noticed tonight on the way home I was really struggling to get mine into gear, its an 06 plate, is this a common fault on new corsas (ie 06) aswell? > If so I'll be taking a trip to vauxhall!

I heard the problem was corrected in 2004.
