redtop engine pics on page 3

latest update page 4 (ooh dear underbody rust to deal with)

Ok, i know its not a C but thought id show you anyway

bought for the tidy sum of £150 from one of the fitters at work no tax or mot but off the road (mate brought it in on lowloader), we have a L reg 1.4 ls model, 126k on the clock but new clutch and cambelt fitted recently and runs sweet as a nut surprisingly lol, so here i have a candidate for my budget track toy

here's what it looked like when i first got it today, looks alot better in the pics, few dents here and there and a bit of surface rust but altogether very solid

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/20032007450.jpg

engine bay has quite a bit of surface rust and the battery is knackered but its nothing i cant take care of
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/20032007448.jpg

of course 2 seconds later i had a bit of spare lunchtime left so tore into the shed, mouldy back seats and half of the trim gone, more to rip out tomorrow
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/20032007451.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/20032007452.jpg

after a tidy up of the rust re-locate the battery in the boot and respray in white

future plans:
C20XE, poss carbs or tb's in the future
brake upgrade 2.0ltr or V6 (havent decided)with performance discs
decent suspension setup, top mounts and adjustable dampers for the future
roll cage (poss make my own)

i'll keep you guys updated :doublethumbs:

More stripping out done today, all the headlining is gone and all the trim, except the dash, along with the carpet and now its just a case of 1 seat, so the car has nearly finished its diet

now comes the task of removing all that sound deadening, now where did i put that heat gun??

carpet gone

its a track car, gonna be used for drag racing and track days, im not really bothered about noise,i know its gonna be noisey,

its not an daily driver, plus i want that all out anyhow because the whole inside i want sprayed properly in white and it does weigh a few kgs, plus wanted to check for any possible rust in the floors that the pads may have covered up, thankfully ther wasnt any

Yeh, if your turning it into a track slag...take out everything you possibly can within reason. But if you just want to shed a little weight it's probably best to just take a dump and blow your nose before you set out.

Cant see it weighing that much? 5kg max.....if that?

if you want to do a track car you best off getting a C16XE because of the weight of a C20LET and an XE is lot and on the track they are great on the straight but corners isnt so gd!

i know but its goin on drag and track, plus im on a budget, and XE comes with 150bhp factory, get a re-map for the time being an i should be happy, so is quite cheap compared to the 16XE which would need more work, wanna try and get this on a track/drag strip soon as

update time

took the rear bumper and rear arches off this afternoon and had a go at giving them a re-vamp

but first of all took out the rear wiper and motor (weld a plate behind where the hole for the wiper has been left later on)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/27032007478-1.jpg

then had a go with the rear arches, scotched them up quickly and sprayed them black with some aerosol spray paint for a satin/matt finish ( all the plastics wil be done this colour)

before
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/27032007477.jpg

after
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/27032007479.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/27032007480.jpg

was happy how they came out look much better so did the same to the rear bumper aswell
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/27032007483.jpg

makes em look brand new, then before i went home, drilled out spot welds on the metal plates that hold the rear seats in (less weight and might get in the way of the cage so decided they wer coming off)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/27032007485.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/27032007486.jpg
and sprayed a quick dash of zinc spray then went home

more to come

Get that indicator tinted tomorrow and you're front arches sprayed black and it'll look so much better.

You going to do much modifying to it or just leave it all standard bar the engine?

want the outside standard but tidy, paint has seen better days and the plastics a bit faded, jus needs a lick of paint here an ther to bring it up to scratch

only body mods would be 16's, revamping the rest and leaving it as it stands (cheaper sleeper stylee)

engine will be changed, in process of locating one(C20XE) , then get brakes and suspension sorted too

3M purple/red scotch, give a quick rub with that to key it up, then spray a few light coats of simoniz black pray paint on em, dust a couple of coats, then add more to the darkness he wants, spray 15-20cm away for matt finish, get closer for satin finish (careful not to run the paint tho)

update time again, had time to make a bit of a start on the surface rust on the car yesterday, noticed the bottom of the passenger door inside is rusted quite bad, so leaving the doors till they are really bad then just replace them,

but rest of the car the surface rust came straight off using a purple wheel, only had time to do a few places but its getting ther, an off course sprayed them all with zinc spray afterwards to protect the metal

and more good news, currently in negotiations for a 2.0 ltr redtop with everything except a gearbox, hopefully can get a mate to bring his van so i can pick it up tomorrow, but we'll see how it goes (really hope i get it tomorrow tho)

no worries coops

VERY good news today, picked my redtop engine WHOOOOOOOO!

2ltr DOHC 16v vauxhall lump is now mine, it was just round the corner from me picked it up for very cheap, looks very clean 82k from a cav

not fully complete needs a gearbox & couple of anciliaries (which are being supplied by graeme who offered me a good deal on spares, cheers mate! )

went round with my dad and his old rover to pick it up, it just fitted in, loom and ecu afm starter and alternator and other bits on the back seat and dropped it off at work, ordering an engine stand for £40 tomorrow or today and get to work on servicing it and changing a few gaskets for peace of mind

couple of peeps take the piss out of my shed, but they wont be laughing when this badboy lump goes in

pics tomorrow hopefully forgot to take some today

maybe the flywheel, but will uprate it as it goes on, as this is on a budget remember

when its finished an i get a bit more money the engine will improve, but 150bhp in a car that weighs the same as a mouse fart will do for now

hey peeps update time again, thought i post a couple of pics of the redtop thats goin in, plus did a couple of dents on the drivers quarter, found a bit of filler from a previous dent which i had to sort but feels ok (bit silly of me to think i wouldnt find filler in a car of this age lol)

bits an bobs ie sfi box loom, ecu and other stuff are around somewhere

have a look out on corsasport or something for a second hand mani and stainless system, much easier to fit before its in.

alloys - speedlines or compomotives :yummy:

think you should whack a subtle gsi kit on it imo

goin for the cheaper option of leaving the outside standard and lowering it, the exhaust system is gonna be done by powerflow which has a workshop on the road i work on, gonna look for a mani on mig web or corsasport

engine wont b goin in for a while mind, loads of little bits of body touch ups to make it sorted and of course the cage i have to make, mostly gonna be saving up to by parts off graeme that i need

new update, dent work;

finished up the 2 dents on the rear quarter, had to fill into the paint and filler from a previous repair, made it a bit more difficult but finished it, only to work a bit futher foward on the quarter to find more! doh! ohwell, if it gets dented badly on the track i'll just replace the whole quarter which would probs be easier

anywho did that bit then set to work on the driver door, this is only to tidy it up, its not gonna be perfect as rust is setting in quite bad so just gonna wait til its really knackered and replace both doors instead

was thinking of selling the old engine but decided whenever the cars bodywork is done its goin straight for the track 2.0ltr fitted or not (if the XE isnt fitted, i'll just rag the 1.4 lump til it blows up  )

update again, bit more work done, but i have made a big choice today, had a look underneath, under floor chassis legs have a couple of holes at the front, so gonna have to patch those up, and jus gonna sort these last 2 dents out paint it as it is, then use it til it falls apart and re-shell it

but anyway that wont be for a while still a couple of years worth of ragging left in the shell iv got now

but got my engine stand today, my foreman used it on his mrk 2 escort rs engine but has finished it so is letting me have his till i do mine
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/04042007512.jpg

2 holes i have to gring out and re-plate and weld with new thick gauge metal, easy job tho, looks worse than it is

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/04042007508.jpg

no major updates today had some other things to do at lunch time, did get the engine on the stand with a few v.sturdy nuts and bolts holding it but forgot to take pics, nevermind...im leaving the car alone for the weekend as iv been working lunches and after work for around 2 weeks now i think iv earned a rest, will be back on it tuesday, gonna rub that filler down then set about getting the dash out

its made by "plastic padding" its ther glass fibre paste filler, less chance of sinking, sand down then a quick skim of top stop job done

yeh sealy masks are ok, my mentor has one, but one of the other panel beaters had a miller elite series mask, i used it once and it was ace, so picked out the orange flame one on a website that supplies them and asked my sis and gf to get it for me

Update time once again

hey everyone, been really busy so have had to put the track shed to one side for a while, had a few things to deal with ie-dad in hospital, my heater matrix on the C leaking (dash out again!!)and needing replacing, changing my C's inner passenger CV boot (lots of grease, bit messy) and general chores popping up at lunchtimes

ANYWAY...

Got stuck into the track shed once again, managed to get the whole dash apart, steering wheel off, dash panels out, just the old heater matrix remains (soon to be disconnected and re-routed)

but found a bit of internal rust- bit more work but nevermind, got the handy sand blaster at work to sort this lot out, then new sealer and i'll be laughing

oh and swapped bonnets for one that wasnt rotten like the old one, just need to wait for a rear end write-off B and swap the front bumpers, as my front one is knakckered

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/20042007532.jpg

update on the shed

finished up the biggest dents now on the exterior now (couple of little other dings but ther not noticeable, this was only a tidy up not show car work)

got hold of a shot blaster aswell and got rid of some of the extrior rust on the lower front panel and on the replacement bonnet i got hold of, plus had a go on other bits of surface rust and covered them with primer and black spray paint to keep the rust out

just need to get pipes for a cage and start measuring/fabricating one to weld in, plus remove the heater and re-oute the pipes and then work on the chassis rail rust underneath, by then have the cash for the other engine parts i need + gearbox

couple of pics

trying out the shot blaster on the bonnet rust, came up a treat
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/28042007551.jpg

finished smoothing off the rear wiper hole

update

Got my Cav Gsi wheels into work today, at lunch got em outside and gave em a dose of TFR (traffic film remover) and a rinse with the jet washer inside an out cos they wer filthy, they look clean in the pics but that helped me find all the bubbling paint and the slight surface rust under the paint
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/08052007557.jpg

so got hold of a palm sander and 400 grit and set about sanding back all the flakey paint an surface rust and will the do the inner part aswell, one has a slight chunk taken out of the face of the alloy about 2mm deep and 8mm long but im sure it will come up fine, especially after these and the centre caps are treated to a nice lick of black paint and some new lo-pro tyres :D

i can see where your going but dont wanna do too much bodywork, keeping it v.simple, especially as i might get a fibreglass tailgate & doors in the future

as for the bumper, im taking the 1st one i can get my hands on, if its a facelift then its a bonus, just waiting for a rear end corsa write off to come into work then im having the bumper lol

BIG CHANGE OF PLANS!

was at work today minding my own business, when one of the painters who had been off on holiday came up to me
"how would you fancy your track car yellow?"
"im listening" i sed

turns out he ordered some yellow paint to repair his E36 M3 he crashed but kept being sent the wrong shades/codes of yellow, so had about 5 tins never goin to be used, so he sed "the tins will only collect dust then get thown away, so we'll chuck em all in together mix em up an see what we get, you can have em for nothing, sound good??"

i was like yeh alright, if i dont like it i can always paint it white again, but i'll keep the inside white

so now the track shed "now dubbed the wasp" will be a random yellow, black plastic bumpers and trim with black cav gsi wheels with the outer rim in the same yellow as the car, and the yello paint is all FREE!!

well a way off from getting it sprayed yet

rollcage to fabricate
underbody rust to plate and weld up
re-seal rusted underbody parts
old engine to remove
engine bay to tidy up
interior rust to deal with
wheels to re-furb

once this lot is out of the way then maybe it will be sprayed, but its long going, as i only get lunch hours to do it in, maybe the odd saturday if im not busy/hungover

SxiSteve
17-05-2007, 21:08
Update time again peeps, been a while but bin really busy with work and afterwork stuff

Managed to nip down the road in one of works hire cars with my wheels to our service department at our dealership site, spoke to one of the tyre fitters and got my tyres taken off for the price of a drink (cheers matteo )
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/11052007562.jpg

so now i could re-furb the wheels properly without the tyres in the way

heres a few closer pics of the inner rim, nasty flakey paint, and that brown stuff isnt dirt/mud its just rotten
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/Stevesxi/16052007566.jpg

so got sanding away and managed to get 2 wheels up to scratch (which i compared below) did start on a the third wheel but forgot to take pics, should have these ready for primer by saturday at the latest (but im not missing cfc v man.u lol)

I reckon the centre caps need the vaux logo doing in silver. I know its minor and petty but its little touches like that, that make things stand out and look tasty as a car as a whole. Otherwise they may look like steelies. (And i know its only a track car, not a show car, so aesthetics dont really matter, but surely its not that much effort and would be nice if it could look good aswell )

Update again, had a stoke of luck today, had a written off Corsa B Ls come into work, with post 97 front bumper, had a bad knock on the wing and driver door mashed, plus the fron suspension was wasted, but my boss let me swap bumpers with it and got hold of a passenger side mirror i was in need of, RESLUT! saved me a few quid :D who needs a scrappy where i work lol

....although had to do it out in the rain at lunch, but here it is, its in quite good nick re-texture the o/s of the plastic where it has a scuff, spray that black and spray the bottom half yellow (may even use it as a test subject, we'll see )

oh and it looks really clean cos i just wiped some de-greaser over it to check for any hidden scrapes or scratches under the mud that it was caked in

just a quick update, havent had a chance at all to work on the car, been busy with the last stages of my apprenticeship and PVS but last friday had a chance to mix up all the different shades of yellow my painter mate gave me

with the hardener and thinners the painters probs use, they say i'll have more than enough to spray the whole outside of the car, the tin looks ALOT bigger than in the pics

Update time again everybody

spent most of the day at work today and finally tackled the underbody rust that has been on my mind for aaaaaaages

the 2 holes on the chassis rails at the front were my main concern, but they easily wer grinded out, found some spare ford chassis leg parts which were the right gauge metal i wanted, cut out the plating to the right sizes welded on and sealed up, easy!

so near side front chassis rail (note i did spray black stonechip sealer over the lot of these but forgot to take pics DOH!)

Just thought it may have been weak welding on there tbh

You prob kno better than me tho

no far from it, the guage of metal is very thick there, you can weld with more power with no chance of it blowing through, thats brought it back up to strength as far as im concerned, that would get it though an mot fine, but its for track use only so i did it this way for my own piece of mind and safety tbh

but if i used the same settings ther when welding a new quarter panel on where the metal gauge is much thinnner then it would blow through every time

Tiny update, picked my new bucket seat on the weekend

but heres the story that goes with it, went to pick up the monaco s cobra seat that i won, got ther and the guy selling that offered me a better seat that had sold on ebay, but the buyer had'nt turned up

he sed he'd let me have it for an extra 20 on what i was paying for the monaco, and i sed 15 and we have a deal so for near enough 85 i got..........

................this! and mint condition, no rips/tears or marks Cobra Imola 2 "Fibreglass back" side mounting bucket seat, which is lighter and perfect for the track car, so was very happy in the end, result!
