View Full Version : Stereo + Electric windows knackered
alright guys,
first post and its about a problem straight away:
fitted a new head unit last week, and today left my mate in the car to go to the shops, came back and he turned the volume up, i turned the engine on and the hu just turns itself off. I thought it may have overheated so i left it for an hour and a half, came back and it still wasn't working, and i discovered neither were my windows.
cue a pretty hairy journey back down the A1(M) at 9pm with fogged up windows, the back ones open and ****loads of spray on the roads, while not putting my fog lights on for fear of the battery running flat.
Dad thinks it may be a blown fuse, we're gonna have a look tomorrow, any suggestions in the meantime?
cheers (apologies for length of post!)
Check the fuses as your Dad says.
Also it could be a nackered battery. Get that checked too.
Yes first port of call would be check all fuses in engine bay.
try a continuety check, dont just go visually. ive had a fuse that looked fine once, that had actually blown :|
yep, definatly the fuse i had this about a week ago, your electric mirrors wont work either:
go to the fuse box under the bonnet take the cover off and as u stand at the side of the car its the fuse in the bottom left hand corner its a 5A aswell.

yea fuse it is. I did the same thing a couple of months back. It should be one of the orange fuses. The car manual should tell you exactly which one if you have trouble finding it like i did.
i memory serves me correctly, its a mini blade fuse then... about 20p each :yippe:
today's update:
got woken up at 8.25 :err: by my dad to take it down the local garage as he's going away so has no time to look at it, (i'd probably just blow up the entire fuse box)
just got it back, the head unit had blown the five amp fuse, so he stuck in a 10 amp and its all sorted now. got some spares in case it happens again
cheers for your help everyone

why a 10amp? there only needs to be a 5amp for the radio/windows/sunroof. its fuse 35.

It's not meant to be a 10 amp fuse though. The fuse may not blow now, but if there is an electrical fault that caused the 5 amp fuse to blow originally then it could cause a hell of a lot of damage before the higher rated 10 amp fuse gets blown.
Replacing blown fuses with higher rated fuses is not the answer.

i'm agreeing with the above. its suppose to be a 5amp fuse for a reason. installing the head unit shouldn't cause the fuse to just blow. are you sure its wired up correctly since you might not notice until its too late if you're now using a 10amp fuse

yes get that changed into a 5 amp asap. if it doesnt blow at 5 amp, it could damage or blow the head unit and the motors from windows
