Daz
very smart piece of kit! :D
as i said to today, i prefer the graphical interface of mine, this is a bit boring, but its has inbuilt navi which is nice!!
price is a bit steep and i expected a 7 inch monitor, tell chan to wait for the avic - x2 ;)
^^ Theres going to be an X2 ?? :o
What you recomend then... she really wants a touch screen DVD HU - need to find something for her!!
rumour has it their will be a sequel to the X1
If she is not fussed about having in built navi id recommend havin a look at mine, or one the alpine units, tho they cost about the same as this! :D
IF she has the cash get an X1
Daz hav a look at this and any1 else intrested in pc's n stuff.. mite not be ideal or feasable for simple use, but its purely hardcore for custom pc/mac lovers. At custom prices :)
Specs are endless compared to market sat nav combi systems.
Just to mention a few... sat nav(gps), mobile phone (bluetooth), link upto your home wireless netwrok (WiFi), watch avi's mpegs dvds vcds etc, but the coolest thing i think is the graphical data representations from the cars ECU!
http://www.stevieg.org/carpc/install/software/
Ooo and tft's touchscreen too :D
^^ Link doesnt work :(
Would have to be made with a Mac not a PC ;) :P
Daz
Very interesting :D
Already told Chan to get a Mac Mini ordered and then just buy a screen....
Will look into it more.
How much is just a touch screen??
http://www-users.aston.ac.uk/~goodmasp/images/photos/software1.jpg
Just did a quick search on google for ^^Lilliput VGA touchscreen^^ £230, not bad for touch screen and the quality must be be ok seeing its a pc enthusiast using it.
this sounds so cheeesy but: "I want that for my next car!" :D
Link to where you can get it for £230 ??
Daz
Grrrr lazy fingers use google :p

And yeah she can legaly but not on her own :look:

I did the cheap option as far as sat nav goes:
ASUS A600 hand held PDA - 200 quid
TomTom3 Software - *ahem* free :-)
GPS receiver - 90 quid
Works like a dream, only loses signal every once in a while and the PDA can be a little temperamental sometimes.
Still, I used the major roads of Europe map and it got me from Maastricht in Holland all the way back to my brothers place in Windsor without a hiccup last year. I use it all the time to find places.
u won't sway from from the avic

no probs
http://www.topgear.com/pioneer/
Nice little page about it on topgear :D
hmm, got my X1r the other week, although i cant fit it for a while what leads will i need to connect it?
cheers
Rob
u can't fit it, u'll have to give it to me in exchange for my HU :look:
omg you have one and havnt fitted it yet?! whats the prob with it - how can you resist fitting it!? im getting one in 2 weeks but aint sure if its the best sat nav on the market or if its better than tomtom... anyone with any useful advice on this?
My dad has one in his, so i already know how to work it and that. Not in a big rush because i cant actually drive yet, lol. Also no tax on the car so cant drive to the car audio specialist in Manchester. (does anybody know anywhere decent NW that fits car audio?)
Never seen the TomTom but the pioneer is amazing, worth every penny if you ask me.
ye i went to get quotes for it today and they came to 1330 with a 6cd changer and fitting. does anyone know if it really is that hard to fit? also the shop ssaid if they fit it i get an extended 3yr warranty with pioneer-ne1 know anything about that?

i had a look atthe fitting instructions on pioneer website, looks great fun, need to clamp the speed wire from the loom or iso, need a clamp or button under the handbrake (to allow tv to be turned on/off), reverse light wire needs clamping so can automatically put the rear view camera on if you have one. they are down to £1050 now so once i sell my car and get a lil polo gti i probably get one. just take a while to install it.
don't bother with the handbrake switch
vincefenlon
09-07-2005, 14:29
what so when you get pulled over and need to prove its installed proper then your knackered, tbh you arent going to be watching scarface whilst your driving really.
but ur passengers might be
proving that its "installed properly" is a bit of a grey area anyways
vincefenlon
09-07-2005, 14:32
not really, theres a thing that basically says if theres a screen which shows something except the cars data, sat nav or just audio then it shouldnt be able to be seen by the driver whilst driving.
well just switch the sat nav on then
we havnt got the handbrake thing installed. It would be a right ball ache anyway. You wouldnt be able to alter the map or anything if it was on,
vincefenlon
09-07-2005, 16:13
thats strange cos when i was working for ocado we had sat nav and could do it whilst driving, could possibly put a switch somewhere instead if you did get pulled over.
do you honestly think that the police would check it? i doubt they'd even know how it was supposed to work. BUT... if you did get pulled, push the button on the top and 'wahey' its an ordinary cd player...

09-07-2005, 16:39
they will try and find something to do you for
but they dont go around pushing buttons on your HU incase it flips out do they... they generally check the outside, exhaust, tints and that sorta stuff...
it doesn't look that great when the screen not up :(
just stick the switch sumwhere else like said, then u can just say look its here
vincefenlon
09-07-2005, 17:38
my mate got pulled cos he had a cd pioneer screen one and they said to him that it shouldnt be up when hes driving because its a distraction, so it does happen. whats the point in having a pull out screen if your not going to use the features like sat nav, all im saying is they will find something and upto you to cover your ass but just had experience with it

ok, thanks anyway.
i'm looking at the AVIC-X1 on ebay, cant really afford the x1r, lol, as insurance to pay this month too. :(
anyways, may get a bargain in a few weeks or something. liam
hold on, arnt there more sensors and stuff to fit tho- the x1r has vehicle dynamics so they need sensors for the g-force display and other random stuff. also there is an ariel which apparantly needs 2 b mounted somewhere in particular? but onto my main quest does anyone know if it is true that unless u get it fitted by an approved pioneer dealer u dont get a 3 year warranty?

the speed pulse sensor is what your refering to, and the original x1 had this also, so nope, no NEW wires to fit. The x1r is only different inside, ie more memory, more maps, better user menu. But doesnt have new features. Altho mine does have different knobs to my dads but thats it.
The aerial can be placed anywhere as far as i know. iv seen them ontop of cars, but on my dads it isnt on the top, its hiddent under the rear bumper i think.
It would make sense that if you dont get it fitted that you lose the warrenty. If you fit it yourself then with the little knowledge you have you could easily cock it up, so id take a guess and say that yes, you lose the warrenty.

bugger getting somewhere like halfords to fit it, they are amateurs, id rather a sparky fit it. shame it aint like windows and electrics in houses, u can get it done by someone without the new card then just get some approved to check it, kinda install it yourself then get someone to check it and sign it (cost a bit of course)
