9857 is from the 2005/2006 range
9883 has better pre-outs and more of them which makes it easier to add in multiple amplifiers
9881 has 1 less pre-out at a lower voltage which is still useful.
what exactly are the pre out puts? im a noob

Ok. A pre-out is a connector (identical to the red white yellow inputs you can connect to a TV) The carry an audio signal. If you have an external amplifier you need to supply it with the audio signal from the head unit, this connection is made via pre-outs.
Since you-re a bit of a noob, I think you will have no problems with the 9881.

i have the 9857 and im impressed by it :)
the 9812 model although a good unit is looking abit dated to me now
is the extra money worth it for an extra pre-out on the 9883 because I was looking into buying the 9881

my CDA-9857R cost me £180 from bass junkies and then i got my ipod connector from halfords link-http://www.bassjunkies.com/?pid=32012&show_my_car=&return_link=%2Findex.php%3Fq%3DCD%2BPlayers%2FMP3% 2BCD%2BPlayers%2FAlpine&source=brand

I don't know if there are any other differences. I would download the manuals and see if there were any different options, but that takes a bit more time than I have free today.
thankls for all ur replys guys :D
the same question that daz asked is it worth payin the extra money for a pre out put? is that just so id hav another speaker??
the extra pre-out means you can have 3 pairs of RCA cables from headunit running to 2 amps (1 for front & rear speakers and another for a sub)... I think this is correct
I've also found another headunit from this price range Pioneer DEH-P6900IB (http://www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk/shop/Pioneer-DEH-P6900IB-DEHP6900IB-CD-Tuner-with-iPod-Direct-Control_searchTextJJ6900ZZgo.xJJ0ZZgo.yJJ0ZZsearch MethodJJproductNameZZproductJJ3155) I've heard this is good as well
ohhright im just gona stick with the normal speakers i mean well the places of them
im just gona replace them i dont rly need an amp or anything dont wana weight the car down :P to much with it all
