Hi ya,
I wonder if ya can help... :?
I am looking to sell both my 12" Rockford Fosgate XLC subs and box and replace them with one sub (fed up with not having any boot space).
Being a girl  i dont know what too look for in subs  so I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good one or what make to go for.
Prob 12" that gives good quality bass but that would be less than £100 quid as i dont know how much mine will go for.
Hope ya can help! :)
depends what music you listen too
10" = Dance/Trance - Quick beats
12"= Suits most types of music
15"= Rap, R n B and hip hop - Longer more spaced out beats
Or so I have been told...

You've been told a generalisation, thats the equivalent of "all Corsas drivers are tossers"
The response of the sub will depend largely on box design.
Probably the first thing we should ask is
"whats your budget?" and
"how much power have you got?"

Ok...
Budget is £100 for the sub and the box if poss.
I am running 2 rockford fosgate 12" subs at the moment so my kicker amp is pretty good and should cope with one sub instead of two.
I also have 2 kicker 6x9's and a sony head unit...
I like the what i call 'bouncy' bass rather than the punch so I think i will stick with 12"
What would you get? :?

i would go for a RE. i have been converted to them and i can never go back the cheapest one they do is about £100 but you would need a box. If you like rolling bass then you should get 2 10's they seem to cope with everything i can throw at them. Dont go to halfords though

This is what I would do:
1) Build a new and much smaller box and keep one Rockford sub
2) Sell the second Rockford and use the funds from that to build the new box
3) Pocket the £100 and if I'm ever in the UK you can buy me lunch

Pete, thats def the price range - what kinda bass does it give?
I used to have a Kicker comp and loved that but no idea what what the spec's on it were to compare.

ultim8DTM5 - there's an offer a girl cant refuse!
But as for building boxes... lol
I have someone who is interested in the subs as they are - maybe if they dont want them i will keep one and sell one. :)

There you go, easy.
Like I said in #2 you can pay someone to build the box for you :)
Maybe you can wink and flirt with someone and give them your 2-sub box in exchange for a discount on a 1-sub box
(btw me = Pete too so I had to re-read your posts)

what sort of box do you need.
An off the shelf one
Or
One that is designed around you sub

Off the shelf ones suck because they are just that- off the shelf.
You don't buy a "one size fits all" pair of shoes do you :D

So many subs to chose from!
Does anyone have the new kicker comp?
There is a square kicker sub too that i like the look of but the ohms etc mean nothing to me! lol
Sorry to confuse you ultim8DTM5 (pete) didnt realise your name was Pete too!

is it a mono block amp? or a 4 channel? run 1 rocky off it in a smaller box!

Square kicker is either the L5 or L7 model.
Ohms is about resistance, comes from Ohms Law (really fun mathematical formula if you are a geek, but a headache if you are everyone else :))
Thats cool, call me whatever you like

Do i want alot of this then? :?
Some say they have 2 Ohms and some say 4 Ohms! :?
Jameshs_SRI

put the link up of the sub your after then we can guide you better :)
Actually, Ohms is the measurement of impedance not resistance. Impedance is the measurement of the resistance multiplied by the power factor, but as the power factor is normally unity then impedance can be directly related to resistance.
What you want girl is a match of impedance between your amp and your speakers.
If the sub you want is 150W 4 Ohm, then to get the best output from it/your amp you will need to buy an amp that can supply a power of 150W at 4 Ohms, and not 150W at 2 Ohm or 8 Ohms.

My amp is a kicker impulse 1x404 (have google searched it but cant find any info on it and cant find the box so thats no good huh)
I have spotted this Kicker sub
http://thebassbin.co.uk/shop/product/products_id/81.html
and this Infinity one
http://thebassbin.co.uk/shop/product/products_id/1465.html
Which one would be better?
Right, been digging and the amp has the following specs RMS Power (watts/channel) @12.5V, 4 Ohm stereo, 0.085% THD, all channels driven: 40 x 4
RMS Power (watts/channel) @12.5V, 2 Ohm stereo, 0.2% THD, all channels driven: 60 x 2
RMS Power (watts/channel) @12.5V, 4 Ohm bridged mono, 0.2% THD: 120 x 2
Dynamic Power (watts/channel) @14.4V, 4 Ohm stereo, 0.085% THD, all channels driven: 55 x 4
Dynamic Power (watts/channel) @14.4V, 2 Ohm stereo, 0.2% THD, all channels driven: 80 x 4
Dynamic Power (watts/channel) @14.4V, 4 Ohm bridged mono, 0.2% THD: 160 x 2
Dimensions (in.) 2.5H x 9.5W x 11.4L Dimensions (mm) 63H x 241W x 289L
Frequency Response: 20Hz-20kHz, +/- 0.5dB
Input Sensitivity: High Level 1V-10V, Low Level 150mV-3.0V
Signal-to-Noise Ratio: >95dB, a-weighted, re: rated power
Active Crossover: 18dB/octave, selectable 70Hz or 110Hz KICKEQ(tm)
Bass Boost: Variable to +18dB, centered @ 40Hz KICKEQ(tm)
Treble Boost: Variable to +12dB, centered @ 18kHz
Therefore the amp has a max outout of 320W Dynamic Power when connected to 2 x 2 Ohm Speakers.
If you are going to run 2 subs, the 4 Ohm Bridged outputs at 160W each is the best way.
Without having more info, I'm not sure that this amp is appropriate for running only one sub, but if you did, again it would only be using 1 x 160W Dynamic(120W rms) output.
Out of the two subs you have chosen, I would say the closet match to your amp is the Infinity as it is 300W rms at 4 Ohm and your amp can supply 120W rms at 4 Ohm in bridge mode.
This mean that the sub can handle more than the amp can throw at it so you shouldn't be able to blow the speaker.

Wow thank you Ka$h!!
So the infinity sub to go with this amp then!
Do you think it would be better to buy a new amp? One that runs just the one sub?
Well unless you want a bigger amp in future then it's pointless buying the kicker as the infinity more than covers what your amp can supply
As for the new amp, nah, keep the 4 Channel so you can add to it again later. I'm sure you'll regret losing that second sub and want to expand in the future.
What else do you have connected to it?
You could for example use 2 Channels for a pair of components or 6 x 9's and then bridge the other two to run one sub as well.
K

The 6x9's are connected to the amp so that will be the sub and 6x9's working off the amp.
Is Infinity a good make then? Its a good price i'll say that!! Just gotta get a box for it.
My Rockfords have sold for £250 - not bad eh!!
You boys know your stuff dont you! xxx
Nice price you got there, and yes Infinity are a good make.
As for knowing our stuff, well it comes with the territory. When you start modding, you learn a lot of different things, some more than others.
I'm no expert on ICE, but being an electrical Engineer, I know a bit about the sparky stuff and it's uses in communicationss and amplifiers.

Well i definately know where to go if i have any more dilemmas!
Think i will go into the shops tomorrow and see if they have the Infinity ones - and if i smile sweetly do you think they'll fit it?
Personalised number plate next i think! Will be asking ya for your opinion on what to get! haha!
Thanks my ICE advisors! lol xxx
Quite a nice looking amp this Girl

You been in my boot takin pics? lol
How comes i couldnt find anything on the 404? You must have the 'touch'.
As for the number plate, I was going to go for an IRISH plate - CAZ - then some random 4 numbers. Wicked eh!!
Why random, can you not find something meaningful? Also CAZ is fine if your name is Carolyn or similar, but not if you are called Bob!
I have a lot of experience on 'tinternet' so can find most things. Best bit is I found that amp for sale on ebay in the states for $3.25 with one day to go :o

CAZ is for Carrie ha ha!
They only have a few that i have found on an irish number plate site and non of the numbers really mean anything.
$3.25 - BARGAIN!!! lol
CAZ is for Carrie ha ha!
 for future reference.

Thats because your amp is an IX404 not 1X404 :)
Yeah just do what ka$h said, I was asleep when you were posting
 Cheers for the back-up bud. Sorry for the tech bit, I'm an elec engineer and like to keep it right.
I sussed the 1x404 to be ix404, but then again finding the spec you already knew that

BTW being an engineer are you familiar with Boyle's Law? I've got a question I need to suss...
I have come across it, what's your problem bud. I don't use it regular, but can have a bash at resolving any problem :?
Let Me Know and I'll see if I can help.

I've had another look at Boyle's law and it really is simple as long as you have 3 of the 4 required variables. Again, LMK

I'm just thinking whether (in competition applications) a car is louder with a door/window open because of it acting as a hemholtz resonator or just reducing cancellation...
Tis a tricky one, and tbh when it comes down to it, it's the judges decision. The only way to find out for sure is to try both.
In theory as speakers are moving more air with the window open, it's better, but why place a sub in a box when free air defeats the purpose.
That's a nice little conundrum you have ther mate, and if you do figure it out, tell me as it now has me thinking.
Time for bed (well it was earlier but........)
