They come with a cross-over so they can be run either actively (using an active cross-over, HU cross-over or amplifier cross-over) or passively (using the supplied cross-over).

and what are the advantages of passive/active?

Firstly I'm guessing you don't know what the fundamentals of an active set up are, so I'll start by explaining what it means, then the advantages become obvious.

In essence, an active set up only means that you dedicate one channel on the amp to one speaker. This does not mean two bridged channels per side is an active set up, it must be a direct channel to speaker relation.

The bonuses are then:
-Better speaker separation, not only stereo (ie left an right channel sound independent) but also each speaker (ie the tweeter and woofer of a component set).
-FAR greater flexibility in setting up the system (since each speaker can have it's own settings adjusted with no impact on the other speakers)

Draw backs:
-Firstly you need a channel per speaker, so for just a simple component front end you need a 4 channel amplifier. If you have a sub you need a total of 5, if you have rears you are looking at an extra 2 or 4 channels (passive and active respectively).
-Secondly you need an active cross-over somewhere in the line. These are sometimes built into amps or HUs, but if they are not then you need and external active cross-over.
-Then it gets complicated. YOU now have to decide on the cross-over points, the relative volume of each speaker, the time alignment ... In essence by gaining complete flexibility in adjusting your system, you lose all the ease that a passive system has - plug and play.

tuning it wont be a problem as my car audio company will be doing that free of charge until they think that its perfect. so basically you have far more control, therefore better SQ, but it is fiddly and i will have to buy another amplifier?

=)

To set it up perfectly you will be the only person on the planet to get it right! People spend decades competing in SQ competitions trying to get these things right. Unless your car audio company is run by an SQ GOD then they will have no chance.
EDIT: And you are trying to do it with 2 sets of components? That will seriously take weeks of dedicated work to get the first round of tuning done. Then it's on to the tweeking.

wouldn't say GOD but the owner come 2nd in IASCA Ultimate pro and most of their clients do well in IASCA. the car is running alpine f1 status with berillyium(sp) and flagship focal amps not sure ifyou keep tabs on score board but they had James Clem who entered this year in rookie who come 2nd and robbie freeman who entered a few years ago as a complete novice and is now competing in european finals

well anyway i'll be competing in their team next season :)

they also work closely with source sounds,

They won't have too much trouble then. It's still a difficult task, but with that experience they'll know what they're doing.

yeah the guy is a sound guy (Lee Murray) and agreed that if i wanted to compete with them next year they would obviously want it tuned to top notch otherwise they're shooting themselvs in the foot :D

so would you recommend me buying another 350/4 and running it like that?

i will have a chat with him tommorrow either way

Nah. My system is in a limbo status at the moment. Basically my front end is installed (poorly) and set up (poorly) and my sub is currently rubbish. When I get some money and time the front end will be properly installed, then I can set it up properly and then eventually I can get the sub sorted. I reckon it will be done by next summer...maybe...
