Hi all, It's Lee's Dad here cos Lee is at work. His 52 plate Corsa Sxi has a problem with the key/ignition switch, to cut a long story short, the end of the barrel, that engages with the ignition switch broke off about 4mm from the end. so turning the key does nothing.

If we buy a 2nd hand ignition lock and key can we just pull the remote bit out of his old key and swap it with the remote bit of the new key to make the immobilisor work or is there a transponder in the actual key body that will need re-programming. Hope that makes sense, cheers.

i belive it would be a straight swap for the barrel as the bit that you need is on the back of the power steering column (see pic below on ebay with the box that says LS)

yes you would have to change over the transponder chips so the engine will start & the circuit board so central locking works

only other problem is the drivers and boot locks as you will need the old key to open them if battery was flat etc unless you get a full set (check ebay) and swap them

Thanks Pugh, so the big bit of key that come out of the holder is just for the remote door locking and the transponder is embedded in the rest of the key somewhere, or is that in the big bit too. Sorry for all the questions. Any ideas on a quick fix appreciated, thanks again.

Sorry you would just need to swap over fobs (unless the old one fob is damaged or the newer one is in better nick) and not worry about the circuit inside

The transponder chip is inside the horse shoe shape when you pull out the fob case you can see it bottom right in its own housing (it's tiny so don't lose it) it also tends to be glued in I get mine out with some tweezers then put some glue on the back and stick it in the same place for the new key

Thanks again Pugh, after much thought Lee has decided to get a new barrel from the main dealer at £52+ the dreaded VAT. They can order him one to fit the original keys if he takes the code, log book and ID to them. Thought about going 2nd hand and maybe taping the old key to the transponder unit but he seems happier to go the expensive route, youngsters eh?

Anyway really appreciated your help, thanks from us both, Rich. (Lee's Dad)
