its been a few weeks since i lifted the bonnet on my car but today found dark brown gunge around what looks like the throttle body.

Not sure if it helps you much if you say its around the throttle body, but my old Peugeot 306 had brown gunge in the oil filler cap. Supposedly this was a result of lots of short journeys, do you give your car long journeys often? If not a quick blast on the motorway may clear it, but I'm not sure, just an idea
