Don't know if this is the correct section but here goes.

My dad has a 2005 Audi A4 2.0TDi 140 and its recently developed some problems.
He uses it mainly for visiting sites for work so it has covered 117,000 miles.

Problems:

When its very cold weather 0c or below it never starts first time and the first 5 or so times of turning the key all we get is one click and nothing else. After 6 or 7 attempts it normally reluctantly grumbles into live.

When ticking over it makes a rattling noise from the front of the engine (worse wen engine is cold).

Also it is producing a lot of smoke from the exhaust, very bad wen the engine is cold but it still smokes a little wen it is warmed up.

Normally averages 61mpg on a motorway journey but now averages around 56mpg since the problems started.

Also the engine coolant needs topping up every few weeks but there doesn't seem to be a leak anywhere and all the hoses are secure.

When driving the car its feels fine and still pulls like a train. But it sounds like and absolute dog.

Any idea's people?

Any help is very much appreciated.

go to a garage and get the head gasket tested
Its going in for an MOT and service next week so i'll get them to test it then.

Dumbass question:
Will it fail an MOT in this state? emissions maybe?
