Cylinder misfire but spark plugs ok

What could cause a misfire even though the spark plugs are ok? After a bit of self-diagnosis with the help of the bloke across the street it appears that no. 2 cylinder has the above affliction. I could change the plugs completely of course, but that may not cure anything and I have a hunch it will do precisely nowt.

This is in addition to this 'tapping' noise I keep hearing. The bloke had a listen for me and picked it up straight away. However, he can't be too sure as to what is causing it. He practically ruled out it being tappets as they're hydraulic, inferring this design rules out many problems that used to occur. He did say that it could be a bent valve, of some other moving part in that area of the engine. It's going to be expensive for someone to have a look let alone repair it, isn' it?!

Yeah, I read your thread just after I posted mine! If mine needs owt like that I'm gonna keep it 'til early Nov (when the insurance is up) and flog it! I can't afford expensive problems like this on a car only 4.5 years old! Or does that make me sound unreasonable? :\

Right, I've took some pics earlier - hopefully we'll get somewhere!

I've also done a bit self diagnostic (where you hold both brake and throttle down and turn ignition on) and came up with these codes - P0300 and P0302. These are 'Misfire unidentified cylinder' and 'Misfire cylinder 2' respectively.

Pic looking down into each chamber. Is the second from right cylinder no.2, as that will tie in with the error code? I guess it's fair to say it doesn't look in the best of shape either, any ideas as to what's caused it?

Also took a nice pic of spark plugs. These were changed in January, I take it these look ok considering their age?

Also took a pic looking down the spark plug connectors, also dodgy looking. Any ideas!?

Thanks!

I changed me spark plugs and it did diddly squat. When I did the self-diagnostic just after I changed them it came back with the same error codes (P0300 and P0302). Also, my engine has done approx. 53,000 miles.

do you not have to get the fault cleared with a diagnostic machine before it will go away?
Maybe. The RAC have been out to look at it recently, I thought they'd have cleared it. Is there a way of doing it myself?
Is your engine warning light always on?

Also, I dunno if you'd know, but when you're facing the car is the second cylinder in from the right cylinder no. 2?

Just been thinking, according to the top sticky topic above, you apparently can't clear previous fault codes. What if my car's ok on that front, but the fault codes are 'historic'? My engine management light doesn't come on so this maybe the case. Also, is there a way to check if the spark plugs are sparking while the engine is running?
